Presenting Maria Vila's "El oficio del artista"

The Formentera Office of Culture is pleased to report that Thursday 24 November at 7.30pm, author Maria Vila will present her book El oficio del artista at the Marià Villangómez Library in Sant Francesc.

As Vila explains, the principal objective of the book "is to provide models for all people who want to dedicate themselves fully to the world of art". "It is also a reflection on why 85% of the world is not doing the job they would really like to do, which constitutes an abysmal loss of human capital", says Vila. In interviews, artists from Eivissa and Formentera who, with optimism and perseverance, have made a living from their craft, explain how they did it. The book speaks to universal themes like money, health and love from a perspective that seeks to do away with the negative stereotypes surrounding such a generous profession. "If you want to know what it's like to make a living from art and what would happen if there were fewer soldiers and more artists in our society, this book is for you!" Vila concludes.

Maria Vila is a writer, translator and calligrapher based on Eivissa. She holds a bachelor's degree in Law from Universidade da Coruña, a master's in Human Rights from Universidad Carlos III in Madrid and a PhD in Anthropology and Social Work. Having lived abroad for many years with people from diverse cultures and worked with interdisciplinary teams, Vila speaks several languages, among them English and Arabic. She has published several works, such as Querida flor, Por amor, Manual del amante, and has collaborated in the recently published book Amb lletra de dona, which discusses local women writers.
