Close of summer school, Council's catalogue of sports camps

Atletisme divertit fotoThe Formentera Council's Office of Youth Services wishes to announce that tomorrow, August 31, will be the last day of the island's summer school programme at the Sant Francesc, Sant Ferran and La Mola primary schools. In total, 170 children took part in the July and August initiative—Escola d'Estiu 2017—along with 21 youth workers and one programme director.

End-of-summer bashes were being staged today at the three schools, giving parents a chance to visit and see photo slideshows documenting their children's summertime activities. Other activities sought to spice up the final day with things like on-stage performances and dance routines. For the final day of programming tomorrow, all summer school participants will go on an outing to Cavall den Borràs beach. For two months, the summer school's organisers put together activities for kids from 3 to 14 (born between 2003 and 2013). Activities took place Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 2.00pm plus early-start option from 8.00am.

The goal, according to the administration's social welfare and youth secretary, was to “create a recreational and educational space for boys and girls in summer”, promoting the “intelligent use of free time and providing options for working families”. The secretary drew a correlation between very high rates of summertime employment and childcare needs.

Sports camps
Two sports camps, coordinated by the CiF Office of Sport, were part of an effort to extend summertime options for the island's youngest. One of them, dubbed “Athletics is fun” (Campus d'Atletisme divertit) and home to 42 runners in training ages three to six, also ends tomorrow. That end-of-summer celebration will take the form of a water party at the municipal pool. Guided by four youth workers and one aide, camp participants participated in explorations of motor skills, crafts, swimming, healthy living habits and the plastic arts.

The Council organised a synchronised swimming camp too, which was open to children born between 2003 and 2012 and ultimately provided acro sport, motor skills, dance, theatre and swimming activities to 103 children. Those activities, which conclude September 12, have been made possible thanks to the work of eight youth workers and one volunteer. Children in that programme took to the municipal cinema to put on their end-of-summer show last Saturday.

Visiting carabinieri agents bid farewell

Foto comiat carabinierisEarlier today in a conference hall of the Formentera Council a farewell send-off was held for two Italian carabinieri stationed on the island this summer as part of a joint effort with local Guardia Civil forces. The law enforcement officials stressed the importance of such collaboration, which, according to Antonio del Fresno, Guardia Civil commander on Eivissa, has been “very impactful”. CiF president's office secretary Bartomeu Escandell gave thanks to the agents for their now three-year commitment on the island. In summer, a considerable number of the tourists Formentera receives are Italian.

Leisure programmes for youth in Sant Ferran

Foto animacio joventut sant ferranThis July and August, the Formentera Council's Office of Social Welfare is working on a way to take culture, sports and recreation to playground audiences. Since September of last year, the programme has seen the Council partner with the administration of Sant Ferran's primary school to stage activities for young children and teens on school grounds.

As part of the partnership, the Council enlists staff to open the play park and sports fields in the Sant Ferran school courtyard for the town's youngsters. Two monitors keep watch every afternoon from Monday to Saturday, giving structure to matches of football, ping-pong, basketball and badminton and overseeing children's games, film screenings, workshops and cycling outings.

Department secretary Vanessa Parellada pointed to soaring use and attendance as proof of the popularity of the service. It will run through winter, although hours will be tweaked according to changes in the timetable of the school's on-site municipal library.

Drones enlisted to patrol Formentera’s coasts for illegal fishing

Foto presentacio inspeccio pesca amb dronsThe Formentera Council's surveillance services are announcing the rollout of coastal drone patrols to complement fishing checks. The goal, says Bartomeu Escandell, chief of the president's office and secretary of rural affairs, “is to leverage low-cost surveillance technology to take aim at illegal fishing on our coasts”. The new service will complement the conventional patrols already carried out by the Council's fleet.

An outside specialist firm is being brought in to oversee the inspections, which will include 15 monthly flights. The checks, conducted by Drones Mallorca for €11,205 before tax, began July 15 and will continue through December 31.

Each patrol will require a report including photo evidence and write-ups of possible offending actions. Any legal action to follow—and the specific authorities to be concerned—will be determined according to where illegal activity took place. The new technology can be harnessed to guarantee that both professional and recreational fishermen abide by existing rules. Next week will see the start of a push to monitor raor fishing.

Islanders increasingly using waste treatment plant

Foto Deixalleria seccio podaThe Formentera Council's Office of Environment has released figures for the island's waste treatment plant showing that, although the Deixalleria logged 10,420 visits last year, the 5,956 rubbish drop-offs registered during the first half of 2017 represent an increase of 508. This year, operators at the plant have reported an average of 39 daily visits, up from 35.5 a day in 2017.

For environment secretary Daisee Aguilera, the figures are a clear indication that the Deixalleria, a facility built in May 2015, “is now a fixture on the island”. The plant accepts garden trimmings, building waste and scrap metal.

Furniture and appliance pickup
According to Aguilera, home pickup of large appliances and furniture is another service whose role on the island has become consolidated. Operators called on 414 homes in the first six months of the year, 76 more than the same period in 2016, when the service reported 338 house calls. A spike in use of the service is pointed up by figures from the two years prior: in 2015 and 2014, pickups totalled 113 and 63, respectively. The telephone number to request the free service is 900.102.656.

The secretary took the opportunity to once again urge Formentera residents to do their part in improving local waste treatment, “for a cleaner island that's both environmentally and economically more sustainable”.

The Deixalleria, located at Formentera's industrial park on the Sant Francesc-La Mola highway, opened in May 2015. All special waste—anything not disposable at street-side bins—should be taken there, Monday to Saturday, 9.00am to 1.30pm, and Monday to Friday, 3.30pm to 5.30pm.
