Formentera celebrates co-ops

cooperativa-1-The Formentera farmers' co-operative, or Cooperativa del Camp, announces that this Saturday October 6 the Casal d'Entitats in Sant Francesc will be ground zero of the local observance of International Co-op Day. The event is being organised by the Balearic Islands federation of co-operatives and Formentera's own farmers' co-op. Support is provided by the regional ministry of work, commerce and industry with additional help from the Formentera Council.

The programme starts 12 noon, when heads of participating organisations will oversee a welcome ceremony. The main event, a round-table discussion about legislation which casts “microco-ops” as socioeconomic drivers, will be moderated by farmers' co-op head Carlos Marí and include Enric Pozo and Jaume Orell. The event is scheduled to finish by one p.m.

In commitment to local athletes, Formentera frees up €15k in aid

foto ajudes esport 2The Formentera Council's office of sport reports it has awarded €15,000 in assistance to four local sportswomen and men—two windsurfers (Sergi Escandell and Mateo Sanz), one runner (Andrea Romero) and one tennis player (Gemma Lairón).

Sport secretary Jordi Vidal described the goal of the assistance as “helping [these four] to develop and continue receiving guidance in competitions at the national and international level”. According to the secretary, the individual subsidies come thanks to a deal struck between the Formentera Council and a wing of the regional government's directorate general for sport, the Fundació per a l'Esport Balear.

The money will go towards gear, equipment and travel to competitions, as well as nutritionists, sport psychologists, physiotherapists and other professionals involved in elite sports.

For their part, the four pledge to wear insignia of the Formentera Council on their competitive and training gear, collaborate in and give technical feedback on the Council's programme on sportsmanlike values; and mention the Council's sponsorship on social media.

Culture and patrimony offices move to Sant Ferran

foto-conselleria-cultura1The Formentera Council wishes to announce the relocation to Sant Ferran of the department of education, culture and patrimony; the administration's language advisory service; the office of trade and markets and the bureau of citizen participation.

From today, inquiries related to these offices should be carried out at the new location, carrer Mallorca, 17A, during regular office hours (9.00am to 2.00pm).

The move stems from a proposal that arose during a discussion on the state of Formentera in 2017. Participants called for reëstablishing the offices in Sant Ferran as a way to promote the town as the island's cultural stronghold.

Islanders can now obtain ID locally

foto DNI 1The Formentera Council announces there is now a place on the island where residents can renew or make a first request for a national ID card, or DNI, meaning islanders are no longer required to travel to Eivissa to handle the procedure.

Formenterers who wish to process DNI requests must visit the Casal d'Entitats next to the department of social welfare (conselleria de Benestar Social). An appointment must be made prior to such a visit, either by visiting the local police department in person, telephoning 971 32 22 01, or on the web at www.citapreviadni.es.

Formentera signs deal with Govern to promote fitness

foto conveni promo esportiva1Jaume Ferrer and Fanny Tur, chairman of the Formentera Council and the Balearic Islands' minister of culture, participation and sport, respectively, sat down today to sign into action a deal to promote fitness in 2018. The Fundació—or “foundation”—for fitness in the Balearics, part of the regional ministry, is unlocking €100,000 to benefit high-performance sport, women in sport and Formentera's image as a sport stronghold.

To that end the Council commits to:

- Supporting high-level athletes who have given standout performances nationally (medal winners in championships in Spain) and internationally (participants in European, international and Olympic meets).

- Collaborating in sporting events such as competitions, seminars and/or training courses that foster Formentera's image as a centre for sport.

- Acquiring specialised sporting material for high-level sport programmes organised by the Council.

- Providing the Fundació with proof of payment for related acquisitions, as well as a brief report of activities prior to December 31, 2018.

To ensure proper follow-up, a committee will evaluate execution of the initiative, explore issues relating to how it is interpreted and reconcile any disparities. The committee will be made up of a representative of the Council and of the Fundació.
