Formentera fire crew deployed in response to fierce winds

foto vendaval 2018 1Formentera firefighters have responded to several incidents caused by strong winds on the island this Monday morning.

At 11.00am the crew snapped into action in Sant Ferran to keep telephone pole on the side of avinguda Joan Castelló Guasch from toppling over. They also stepped in to take down shutters in danger of falling from a first-storey flat and another lamp dangling precariously from a post.

Lastly, crew members cut and removed a small tree that winds had left in the middle of the road.

Formentera libraries choose Sant Ferran's library connection for all-new English storytime

foto millie porter 2The Formentera Council's education office announces that at 5.00pm this Monday, November 26, the Sant Ferran library will host Millie Potter, the island's first-ever English-language storytelling session.

Elàstic Nou, the theatre company behind the educational initiative, say the premise of Millie Porter —combining homemade storytelling with an actress from an English background— is all about getting kids interested in the language.

The show's wild dynamism creates a setting in which participants are in near constant interactive engagement. Through words, songs and games, Millie takes children on a journey they aren't likely to forget.

CEIP Mestre Lluís Andreu salutes victims of gender violence

foto-homenatge-2018-4This Friday the teaching staff and student body of CEIP Mestre Lluís Andreu will host a special tribute event to honour the women and children claimed by gender violence in 2018.

CiF culture secretary Susana Labrador was joined by school director Neus Masdeu and Espai Dones chairwoman Dolores Tamargo in launching an appeal to the 450 pupils in the crowd to do their part to jettison gender violence, emphasising the importance of more equitable education if future generations are to achieve the goal.

Picking up where the adults left off, the children in the crowd chimed in with their own performance of Aitana's “Ets la força”, showing off posters and other craftwork inspired by the struggle to end violence.

Local observance of International Day for the Elimination of Violence this Sunday November 25 comes with an entire morning of activities. Volunteers will staff an information booth in Sant Francesc's plaça de la Constitució from 11.00am. At noon the students of the Eivissa-Formentera conservatory will give a concert and then a flash mob will dance to Rosalia's “Malamente”. At 1.00pm, the crowd will hear voices calling for the erasure of gender violence as part of a reading of the day's manifesto. Capping the day's programme, the film Custodia compartida will be shown in the cinema (Sala de Cultura).

Christmas on Formentera

foto-campanya-nadal-2018-1The time is always right to enjoy Formentera. But, once summer fades, precious few are aware of the island's many perks for wintertime travellers.

A good opportunity to discover them is Christmas, when the smaller of the Pityusic islands comes alive with a programme of activities that stretches into January.

This year the Christmas season starts Friday, November 30, as does islanders' chance to check out the Sant Francesc Christmas market, or Mercat Nadalenc, and illuminated holiday decorations.

Mercat de Nadal 2018

The market, which will settle into its usual spot next to plaça de la Constitució, is conceived as a holiday meeting place and an amplification of the gift-giving possibilities available to Christmas shoppers.

Mercat de Nadal 2018 kicks off at 6.00pm with the lighting of Christmas decorations, followed by live music.

Three of the stands deal in retail—think wooden toys, T-shirts and anything else a kid can imagine. The other seven stands—dedicated to food and drink—are where marketgoers can decide whether they feel like German, seafood, kebabs or traditional fare.

Stands are open from 11.00am to 2.00pm and 5.00pm to midnight and occasional live music performances are scheduled.

Children's activities

This year's programme also features activities for the island's youngest. Plus, there will be colouring tables, and kids are welcome to pop in anytime.

”Out of Plastic” hits Formentera

cartel-outofplastic1At 6.00pm this Monday, November 26, La Casa del Poble in La Mola will screen the documentary Out of Plastic.

The documentary explores the wide-ranging impact of plastics in the Mediterranean.

Shot in the Balearics, the film is a vehicle for reflection on the preponderance of plastics in our everyday lives and natural environment. Visually stunning, Out of Plastic shows spectacular landscapes and the mystic depths of the ocean —the meeting point of man and nature— and seeks to show how our excessive reliance on single-use plastics has tipped the scales against nature and, ultimately, our own kind.

The winning conceit of the documentary is to let nature speak for itself, elegantly marshalling timeless and arresting landscape shots, panoramic vistas and images of marine life.
