Formentera welcomes 11th Mitjà Marató

foto-presentacio---mitja-marat1The Formentera Council's president and councillor of sport met today to unveil details about the island's eleventh half-marathon (Mitja Marató) and 8K run, both scheduled for Saturday May 11. Joining Jaume Ferrer and Jordi Vidal at the presentation was Manuel Hernández, the head of the organising firm Unisport Consulting, not to mention representatives of the event's biggest sponsors: CaixaBank (Maria Cruz, director) and Trasmapi (Nuria de la Torre, marketing chief).

All told 3,200 athletes are scheduled to compete—2,000 in the Mitjà Marató and another thousand in the 8K route. The starting shots of both fixtures will ring out at 5.30pm, though in different places: participants in the half-marathon start at la Mola lighthouse and—in what Manuel Hernández described as a safety measure—8K runners will take off from the es Ca Marí turn-off (outside Sant Ferran).

This year some six thousand completed early registration for the event. Hernández said the total number of participants was capped several years ago in a bid to make the fixture more enjoyable for runners and better adapted to the dimensions of the island.

Mitjà Marató turns eleven
The CiF first councillor described the eleven-year-old half-marathon as a well-established feature on the local calendar that “enables people to exercise and see everything the island has to offer: from la Mola's lighthouse to la Savina's”. Ferrer also underscored the Mitjà Marató's low-season tourist appeal.

Councillor Vidal thanked collaborators, organisers and sponsors, as well as security forces and volunteers at the event, to make the race possible. Vidal pointed out the importance of years of support in making the Mitjà Marató a nationally-recognised race. He also asked islanders for their patience ahead of the traffic interruptions expected.

Traffic interruptions
Starting at 4.45pm the main highway will be blocked along the following stretches: la Savina-es Pujols-Sant Ferran and Sant Ferran-la Mola. Segments will be progressively reopened as runners make headway, and normal traffic flow is expected to be fully re-established by 8.00pm.

The stretch of road connecting the town of el Pilar de la Mola and the nearby lighthouse will be closed to vehicle traffic from 3.00pm. Organisers say the highway should be reopened—and runners gone—by 5.45pm. Traffic on the road between la Savina, Sant Francesc and Sant Ferran will not be affected.

Trophies will be handed out at 7.00pm on passeig de la Marina in la Savina, near the finish line.

Formentera Council's “campus esportius”

foto campus estiu 1In an effort to increase the alternatives available to island youth for the approaching summer holidays, the Formentera Council department of sport is organising two sport day camps (campus esportius) at Antoni Blanc fitness centre and the municipal pool: one is called Atletisme Divertit (Fun with Athletics) and the other, Activitats Aquàtiques i Motrius, is dedicated to water activities and movement.

Enrolment in Atletisme Divertit opens Wednesday May 15 (Poliesportiu Antoni Blanc, 8.00am–9.00pm; online on OVAC). Applications will be processed in the order payment on completed applications is received. Should demand for Atletisme Divertit outstrip the space that is available, a waitlist will be started in case spots are forfeited. Would-be participants who register for both summer months will be given preference. Enrolment is not valid until the payment process is completed at the fitness centre.

Daily activities start at 9.00am and continue to 2.00pm, Monday to Friday. Early drop-off is available for families who need it between 8.00am and 9.00pm.

Atletisme Divertit begins July 1 and comes to an end August 30. It will be run by five youth workers and offer capacity for 50 children aged three to seven. Children will practice fine motor skills, arts and crafts, swimming for fun and healthy habits.

“Activitats Aquàtiques i Motrius”
Signups for Activitats Aquàtiques i Motrius (Aquatic and Motor Skill Activities) can be processed 8.00am to 9.00pm between May 27 and June 7 at the fitness centre, or online on the OVAC website. Again, the order in which applications are processed will be based on when payment on completed applications is received. Would-be participants who register for both summer months will be given preference. Enrolment is not valid until the payment process is completed at the fitness centre.

The Aquatic camp runs from 9.00am to 2.00/2.30pm, Monday to Friday, and here too, early drop-off is available—from 7.45am to 9.00am—for families that need it.

The programme, which starts July 1 and ends September 13, will be run by eight youth workers. Space is available for 80 children, born in or after 2014. The camp used to be called Synchronised Swimming, but organisers feel the new title is a better fit given activities cover a breadth of areas like aquatics and body and movement.

An activity will be staged at 7.30pm on July 27 in which parents and families can participate with their children, and an 8.00am exhibit is scheduled at the cinema on August 31.

Prices
The monthly cost of the day camps is €150 and early drop-off casts an extra €30 per month. Reduced prices are available for families with more than child enrolled, large families and children of CiF employees.

Summer schools
Enrolment for the CiF youth services department's summer school programme (escoles d'estiu), which will be held at the island's three primary schools, is scheduled for the first half of June.

Spokespersons' committee takes stock of parliamentary session

reunio---junta-de-portaveus pr2This morning came with a meeting of the Junta de Portaveus—the parliamentary spokespersons' committee—of the Formentera Council. Made up of representatives from each political party on the Council as well as the administration's president and his department chief, Jaume Ferrer and Bartomeu Escandell, the group sat down today for its last meeting this term.

According to the CiF chief, the Junta has convened 24 times during the current parliamentary term, compared to only six times in the term that ran from 2011 to 2015. He said that 14 priority proposals obtained cross-party support in 2015, but that getting them off the ground would require the involvement of other agencies. “The last four years have been a prime example of what can be achieved when we base our efforts on consensus”, said Ferrer, adding that most of the administration's proposals have come to fruition.

Councillor Escandell gave an update on those 14 proposals. He highlighted the effort to oversee a reordering of estany des Peix, celebrating recent changes that he said “put the Council in a position to discuss the pond's management—and the recovery of the natural gem it represents—with the islanders who actually use it”.

Other projects that have picked up steam have involved regulating which vehicles can be brought onto the island, improving the regulation scheme in place on the local coastline, activating the irrigation pond, starting work on the assisted living centre, reordering la Savina port, preparing for construction of Sant Ferran's new schools, promoting year-round housing, taking possession of authority over tourism promotions and securing funding that reflects Formentera's “double insularity”.

The councillor insisted that there is work still ahead, and pointed to efforts like regulating maritime transport, building the Formentera museum, modernizing es Ca Marí power plant and reclaiming the island's salterns, or salines. The entire committee described the Junta as an effective tool in building consensus on projects that affect Formentera.

Council unveils 'Formentera, a safe place to travel' pamphlets

foto-destinacio---segura prems1Today at 12 noon in the CiF Sala d'Actes, a team of individuals including the head of the CiF president's office and the councillor of tourism (Bartomeu Escandell and Alejandra Ferrer, respectively) as well as local police chief Félix Ramos and Enrique Gómez Bastida, the Guardia Civil's commander in the Pityuses, met before members of the press to unveil “Formentera, destinació segura” (Formentera, a safe place to travel).

President Ferrer said the outreach initiative's associated pamphlet covers the safety essentials for visiting tourists, not to mention smartphone apps to report a crime (AlertCops), online tools to file incident reports (“e-denuncies”) and important phone numbers and basic tips.

The brochure is being published in Castilian Spanish, Catalan and English, and is available online in the Useful information section of the island's portal for tourists: https://www.formentera.es/en/planning/useful-information/

Interpreting in 50 languages
The CiF tourism office has contracted Dualia, a service that provides interpreting in more than 50 languages. Said Ferrer: “One phone call is all it takes to obtain assistance in over 50 languages—24 hours a day, 365 days a year”.

The civil guard, local police, lifeguard and rescue services, tourist info spots and CiF emergency social work staff plan to use the system as well. Ferrer described Dualia as a way to “avoid slip-ups in translation, improve services for visitors and islanders who are still learning our language, and minimise incidents that stem from cultural differences”.

Those at the press conference pointed out that tourists will also need to sign up on the Guardia Civil's registry of overnight lodgers as an additional measure to improve local safety.

Security reinforcements
Commander Gómez pointed out that this summer special Guardia Civil security forces like SEPRONA and ROCA will be in place on the island. As in years past, an extra continent of traffic agents will be here, too.

President Escandell underscored that the local police force was preparing to expand its ranks to 16 this summer, with enough manpower to cover every shift. He additionally pointed to the formation of the administration's inspection team and brigade of blue zone parking attendants as key to freeing up law enforcement officers for other operations.
