Consell starts work on Formentera's second Gender Equality Plan

The Office of Equality of the Consell de Formentera has begun work to develop the second Gender Equality Plan which will be in force until 2027.

Ana Juan, president and equality councillor of the Consell de Formentera, affirmed that with assessment of the first plan, in force between 2019 and 2022, now complete, work on the second plan is now under way. The president pointed out that "the first plan grew out of a need to dynamise and set targets in local awareness building, training and equality work", as stated in Law 11/2016 [28 July] on gender equality.

Questionnaire
With implementation of the first plan complete, the Office of Equality tracked the various actions in collaboration with heads of distinct offices of the Consell to obtain information and monitor implementation. This evaluation is the starting point for Formentera's next Gender Equality Plan for 2024-2027. To conduct this study, a questionnaire has been created so that islanders can give their opinion on equality on the island.

President Juan encouraged the people of Formentera to take part. "Islanders' collaboration is key to tailoring the plan to people's needs and because it will help us set the lines of action to advance towards a society that is a more egalitarian and respectful between men and women", said the president.

The questionnaire is anonymous and confidential and can be answered at this link in Catalan
and also in Spanish.

The questionnaire will also be shared across the official online profiles of the Consell de Formentera, associations and, physically, with posters in various corners of the island.

"8M" activities programme starts Sunday with Tribute to the Elderly Women of Formentera

foto 2023iii presentacio 8MToday Ana Juan, president and equality councillor of the Consell de Formentera, and Dolores Fernández Tamargo, president of Espai Dones, presented the local activities programme on the occasion of 8 March, International Women's Day ("8M"), which this year revives the Tribute to the Elderly Women of Formentera, an event that in the last three years could not be held because of the pandemic.

President Juan congratulated Espai Dones for recovering the elderly women's tribute, which will feature 15 female residents of the island born between 1936 and 1937. The event will unfold in La Mola's Casa del Poble at 12 noon, and feature performances by Maria José Cardona and local dance troupes.

The president stressed the importance of "recognising the women of the island who for years have done fundamental work for the development of our society, work that was hidden." Juan recalled that giving visibility to women is "precisely the purpose of the Consell de Formentera's first equality grant." 'Valuing the invisible work of women in 20th-century Formentera: Pioneers of sustainable living practices', a project by researchers Mònica Grau Sarabia and Stella Mally, received this first grant and work is already underway.

In addition, Juan signalled that next week surveys will be administered to initiate the drafting of Formentera's second Equality Plan. "It is very important that people participate, that they share their opinions, needs and contributions to continue working towards the goal of a more egalitarian society", she said.

For her part, Dolores Fernández Tamargo praised the collaboration of all the groups and associations that participated in this year's extensive programme and "which continue fighting for gender equality on Formentera."

'The value of the invisible work of women on 20th century Formentera' wins Consell de Formentera's first research grant for equality

foto 2023i dona cabresThe Office of Equality of the Consell de Formentera is pleased to report that a research project led by Mònica Grau Sarabia and Stella Mally titled 'The value of the invisible work of women on 20th century Formentera: Touchstones of sustainable living practices' will receive the local administration's first ever research grant for equality, valued at €8,000.

According to Ana Juan, "the goal of this grant to harness scientific research and know-how to acknowledge the importance of women in Formentera society." The president and equality councillor of the Consell de Formentera stressed that the results of this study would serve as "a starting point to achieve a more egalitarian island."

In their project report, Grau and Mally highlight the problematic nature of the fact that "everyday work traditionally done by women has been invisible and unacknowledged" and describe their goal as "giving visibility to and acknowledging local women's economic activities which have been key to progress." This project will mainly document practices involving natural resources like water, land and animals; agriculture; fishing; livestock; tourism; care and parenting.

"¿Qué coño está pasando?" documentary opens Formentera's commemoration of 25 Nov.

foto 2022xi presentacio 25NToday the Formentera Office of Equality together with the Espai Dones association presented the events organised for 25 November ("25N"), International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The programme starts at 6.00pm, Friday 18 November, with a screening and subsequent discussion of the documentary ¿Qué coño está pasando? at the adult learning centre (Escola d'Adults, CEPA Pitiüses classrooms) next to CEIP Mestre Lluís Andreu.

Through various reflections, the documentary unpacks issues related to gender equality and gender violence, "one of the drivers of inequality that remain deeply rooted today", say the film's directors, Marta Jaenes and Rosa Marquez.

The next activity will be the Formentera Office of Culture-organised "Informe de camarera", an exhibition by Canarian artist Alejandro Robaina Vera. The exhibition opens at 7.00pm, Monday 21 November, at Sala d'Exposicions "Ajuntament Vell". Alejandro Robaina has always maintained close ties with cleaning staff and, through his aunt, mother and cousins, who have worked as hotel cleaning staff, had first-hand knowledge of their conversations, labour struggles, joys and struggles.

At 10.00am, 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women programme will start at Ràdio Illa with a round table where participants include representatives of social spheres, psychology, health, law enforcement and the Formentera Office of Equality.
