Formentera firefighters clear trees brought down by wind

caiguda-pins1Firefighters of the Consell de Formentera removed fallen trees from a road in Punta Rasa (Cala Saona) following recent winds. At 12.10pm, 112 emergency response notified the Consell about the trees and that they were blocking the flow of traffic. In an intervention which had concluded within an hour of the call, the fire crew hauled off two toppled pine trees that were burned in a summer 2017 fire.

Representatives huddle for first full-house assembly of term

ple-juliol-20191The Consell de Formentera called council members today to the July plenary assembly—the first full-house session of the new legislative term. The session brought cross-party support for a proposed update of the Consell's organisational rules. Assembly members agreed to ask the parliamentary spokespersons' committee (Junta de Portaveus) to study a path forward.

Councillor of General Services, Bartomeu Escandell, pointed out that, since passing in March 2010, the rules, or Reglament Orgànic, “are what's given us our unique status as an administration at both the municipal and island levels. We think it's appropriate, nine years on, to update it for today's reality”.

Representatives agreed to urge the Balearic Parlament to expedite measures towards new legislation governing the island councils, or consells, that recognises the singularity of the Consell de Formentera, and puts the legal framework in place to organise and regulate it.

Upgrades at nature reserve
Support also came for a proposal from Sa Unió de Formentera PP-Compromís about accessibility at ses Salines natural reserve. Brokered by the GxF-PSOE Governing Team, the measure passed with “yes” votes from the 11 councillors of the cabinet, and despite the 6 opposition councillors' abstention.

Mobility councillor Rafael González stressed that the beaches located in ses Salines are among the island's leading draws for tourists, meaning “at rush hour, demand outstrips supply” in terms of parking spots for personal cars.

González framed the proposal as “enlisting tech to go beyond the Sustainable Mobility Strategy's backing of more sustainable modes of transport” to “improve the information we provide ses Salines' visitors about access and what parking conditions to expect”.

Another proposal launched by Sa Unió and brokered by the GxF-PSOE Governing Team concentrated on training opportunities in music and dance on the island. The measure passed despite Sa Unió abstention.

The measure calls on the Balearic Ministry of Education, Universities and Research and the Consell de Formentera to “work together to find an integrative solution to accredited and non-accredited studies in elementary and professional music and dance that uses public money in a way that is smart, efficient and responsible”.

Other proposals
The proposed configuration of the island's coalition of community stakeholders was ratified by unanimous vote. A vote to empower the Consell de Formentera president to oversee so-called special interest declarations for public works and other projects, and a vote to rewrite the waste collection contract with CESPA, both passed despite Sa Unió abstention.

Consell celebrates Diada de Formentera

2019diada1The Consell de Formentera hosted its celebration of the Diada de Formentera by honouring local residents and businesses with awards—the island's gold medal (Medalla d'Or) and the Premis Sant Jaume. The 8.30pm ceremony took place at the Sala de Cultura (Cinema).

Sant Jaume awards
One of the Sant Jaume awards goes to AECC Formentera. The Formentera chapter of the Asociación Española contra el Cáncer, from its leadership to its corps of volunteers, work with selfless generosity to better the lives of people living with cancer, to accompany and support them and their families, not only acting as advocates for those who are suffering, but also supporting prevention efforts in building awareness around health issues.

Jazz&Co also received the distinction. In twenty-five years, they have become an unavoidable feature of our cultural landscape. The group is synonymous with summer nights, and live (particularly jazz) music in the squares of Sant Francesc and Sant Ferran, and bringing into the fold both local talent and international names.

The other Premi Sant Jaume goes to Can Forn in Sant Francesc, for sixty years of service as a family-run, local shop, and one which, across the generations, has stayed true to its original allure as a neighbourhood outpost.

Gold medal
This year's Medalla d'Or will go to Formenterers Solidaris in recognition of the charitable, altruistic and humanitarian work the association performs to address the needs of the less fortunate through support and orientation, as well as local funding for aid and development projects across the globe.

A representative of the group expressed appreciation for the award on behalf of other honourees, and President Alejandra Ferrer gave an address to the crowd in which she saluted this year's winners.

The prize-winners are “a mirror where we can see ourselves reflected", said Ferrer, "You reflect us, and that's a great and fantastic responsibility”. “Your deeds and values are commendable, and we hope they guide us as a people”.

The evening concluded with a performance by local band Sweet Lure. Among those in attendance were the Balearic first minister Francina Armengol and deputy first minister Juan Pedro Ylanes; not to mention Sílvia Tur, Formentera's provincial councillor at the regional parliament; Vicenç Thomas, the body's chairman; Consell d'Eivissa president Vicent Marí; Santa Eulària mayor Carmen Ferrer; and Consell de Formentera leadership.
