Casal de Joves unveils July activities calendar specially tuned to stay cool

The Formentera Office of Youth Services has presented the Casal de Joves' July programme. Vanessa Parellada, councillor of youth services, described the activities proposed at the youth drop-in centre as "100% summer-friendly" and encouraged local youngsters to "enjoy the programme and enjoy summer".

Activities kick off Saturday 2 July with a karaoke contest. On two Wednesdays, 7 and 27 July, films will be shown on topics of interest to youth at the Casal. Friday 8 July, a table football tournament will be held with prizes for the winners.

The hot-weather activities start Saturday 9 July with an afternoon of water games; on Wednesday 13 July there will be a soap bubble activity; Saturday 16 July, there will be a bike ride and picnic on the beach, and Wednesday 20 July, a cooking workshop in which participants will craft refreshing ice cream treats.

One of the most eye-catching proposals on the July calendar is also part of Sant Jaume celebrations: Young Night (Nit Jove) will take place on Friday 22 July at 9.30pm in Sant Francesc's Plaça de la Constitució. The concerts will feature young artists from the island. To close out the month, on Saturday 30 July there will be a creative nail workshop.

The course on Japanese comic illustrations enters its fourth month in July, taking place every Thursday and continuing through August. The Casal de Joves is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 4.00pm to 10.00pm.

Formentera convenes children's and youth council for second session this year

foto 2022vi consell joventutThis morning, members of the Children's and Youth Participatory Council (Consell de Participació de la Infància i la Joventut, CPIJ) gathered for the second plenary session so far this school year and the first face-to-face plenary since the start of the pandemic. The meeting was chaired by Ana Juan, president of the Consell de Formentera, and co-chaired by Vanessa Parellada, councillor of youth. With representatives of the island's primary schools unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts, pupils at Marc Ferrer Secondary School (IES Marc Ferrer) were the only other attendees.

The president welcomed plenary councillors and praised their good behaviour during pandemic. For her part, Councillor Parellada drew attention to the fact that the CPIJ plenary assembly had been at the origin of proposals such as the skate park.

The youth councillors proposed changes to improve the skate park's functionality, highlighted potential upgrades at the high school, and asked about formentera.eco security cameras. They also asked about outdoor facilities for archery training, a project on which the Consell de Formentera is already working.

Plenary attendees were also reminded that people under 18 can ride the bus for free and that they will soon be able to practise calisthenics at a dedicated space at the new Espai Cultural de Sant Ferran.

foto 2022 escola estiuThe Formentera Office of Youth Services is pleased to report that registration for the 2022 Summer School [Escola d'Estiu] starts today, Monday 6 June, and ends Wednesday 15 June. Registration can be completed online at the Virtual Citizen Information Office [OVAC] or in person at the Citizen Information Office [OAC].

This year's Escola d'Estiu starts 1 July and continues through the end of August at the schools of Sant Francesc and La Mola and the former Sant Ferran primary school. The programme is for children aged 3 to 12. Attendees are welcome from 8.00am to 2.30pm.

"The Consell hopes this programme is helpful for working families of the island, particularly during the summer high season", said Vanessa Parellada, Councillor of Youth Services, "but we also hope that these leisure options give children a space to grow, play, share, learn and have fun with activity leaders who will look after them during the summer holidays".

Priority in admission will be given to families facing challenges balancing work and life or socio-economic hardship, and those with at-risk youth.

June activities at the Casal de Joves

foto 2022vi cuina casalThe Formentera Office of Youth Services [Conselleria de Joventut, CdJF] is pleased to announce the activities planned for this June at the island's youth drop-in centre, Casal de Joves. Councillor Vanessa Parellada said that in addition to activities, "CdJF personnel support young people and assist them in whatever they need, whether that's studying, looking for work, sharing experiences or talking about issues that are important to them". "Our staff stay by young people's side at a time that is immensely important in the formation of their personalities and their transition to adulthood", she continued.

A film screening starts off the programme on Wednesday 1 June, with a two-week run of Wednesday night movies picking up two weeks later exploring the theme of refugees (15/22 June). On Friday 3 June, there will be a massage workshop with soft music to set a relaxing atmosphere. Then, Saturday 4 June comes with a perennial favourite: the Casal cooking workshop, where participants share and prepare healthy recipes.

On Wednesday 8 June, the gang will once again break out "Twister!", a game where young people have fun and explore their flexibility. On Friday 10 June, a table tennis tournament will take shape, and the winner will come away with a pizza. On Saturday 11 June, a henna workshop will offer youth the chance to experiment and unleash their imagination and creativity.

On Friday 17 June, stay flexible and build strength with an acrobatics workshop, another frequent feature on the Casal's monthly calendar. And for World Refugee Day on Saturday 18 June, La Nave Va will lead youth in "Trapped Between Two Realities" [Atrapades entre dues realitats], a workshop on refugees that is both participatory and educational. On Friday 24 June, all those interested can join in painting a new mural on the Casal's outside wall under the direction of Edgar Vilamajó, who has already overseen several murals for the Casal.
