Summer hours at Formentera libraries

foto bib maria villangomez The Formentera culture and education departments are announcing updated opening hours at several of the island's library facilities. From June 15 to September 15, Biblioteca Marià Villangómez, the adjacent computer lab (el Telecentre) and Sant Ferran's public library will all observe summertime hours.

Hours of operation are as follows:

Biblioteca Marià Villangómez:
Monday to Friday:
MORNINGS: 10.00am to 1.00pm
EVENINGS: 5.00pm to 8.00pm

Telecentre:
MORNINGS: Tuesdays and Thursdays: 10.00am to 1.00pm
EVENINGS: Monday to Friday: 5.00pm to 8.00pm

Biblioteca Sant Ferran:
Monday to Friday de 5.00pm to 7.00pm

New hours will also be observed at AISF, Formentera's image and sound archive, where summertime visits will be by appointment only. Visitors are asked to phone the CiF office of culture or send an email to AISF.

The schedule change is determined by the academic calendar, and coincides with a shift in the typical profile of visitors to the libraries in summer. The shuffle makes it possible for staff to carry out certain seasonal activities as well, like cleaning, revising the full catalogue, decluttering storage space and reorganising files.

Council puts up €95K in student financial aid

Foto estudiants a classeThe Formentera Council's education office reports that today, Friday May 18, to June 28, applications are being accepted for assistance for used text books, higher education and travel costs during the 2017-2018 school year. Education secretary Susana Labrador held up the “renewed support the assistance offers Formentera students” while highlighting other financial support also available at the regional and national level.

The Formentera Council has earmarked €95,500 for students this year.

Assistance for text books
The Council has pledged €45,000 for textbook purchases. The money will benefit resident families registered on the local padró by helping build reserves of second-hand textbooks at Formentera's primary and secondary schools. Schools will get €50 for every child in primary and €70 for pupils in secondary education. For large and single-parent families, the aid covers 100 per cent of costs.

Money for higher education
The Council will hand out €12,500 in ten €1,250 grants. To be eligible, candidates must be domiciled on the island and enrolled in higher learning (university, fine arts, technical studies, professional fine arts, design, sports studies)”, Aguilera reported. Study grants will only be awarded to students of public, attendance-based programmes. Private schools will only be considered if the studies in question are not offered by any public establishment.

Travel aid
Locals can also request travel cost reimbursements if their higher education, technical training programmes, postsecondary formal education or art programmes are not offered on Formentera. The Council will dedicate €38,000 for aid of that order, split into chunks of €150 for students in Eivissa or in distance learning programmes and €450 euros for students who study outside the Pitiüses.

Conditions
Details on eligibility and documentation required for the application are available here.
Submissions can be dropped off in person at the Citizen Information Office (OAC) or online on the OVAC website.

For more information potential candidates can visit the Council's department of culture, education and patrimony. The deadline for requests is June 28.

Open registration at early-learning centres

foto escoleta 2018 1The education office of the Formentera Council reports on the start of signups, this Thursday, May 3, for 2018-2019 enrolment at the Formentera Council's two nurseries, sa Miranda and es Camí Vell. The last day to register is May 16.

Interested parties can pick up and drop off the registration form at the Citizen Information Office (OAC) May 3-16 from 9.00am to 2.00pm. The office is open Monday to Friday. Forms can also be submitted online, via the Virtual Citizen Information Office, within the same deadline.

The application itself provides families a guide for navigating paperwork (while some documents are required, others are for used for the schools' information only) as well as a roadmap of important dates on the academic calendar.

Families are encouraged to contact both nurseries, or escoletes, directly. Staff at sa Miranda handle inquiries Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 1.30pm to 3.30pm, and es Camí Vell accept information requests Wednesdays from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

CiF education secretary Susana Labrador explained that the admissions process would be the same for both schools, and that applicants would also have the opportunity to note their preference for placement. Incoming students at sa Miranda escoleta must be born in 2016, 2017 or 2018; es Camí Vell accept children born in 2016 and 2017.

Between the two schools, which will remain open year round in 2018, there is space available for a total of 128 children. Staff at the centres consist in 16 instructors, one director and one educational assistant for special-needs children, as well a cook and assistant to oversee kitchen service.

According to Councillor Labrador, early-childhood education is “a great challenge” guided by two grand objectives: “premium quality and zero wait lists”. Though infant education isn't mandatory, she confided, “it is an essential part of balancing one's family and his or her professional career”.

Open enrolment for new round of Catalan courses for adult learners

Classes cursos de catalaThe Formentera Council's language consultancy department will once again offer Catalan language courses for adults.

All those interested can register from February 28 to March 9 at the Citizen Information Office (OAC, at carrer Ramon Llull, 6). Classes begin March 12 and will continue until May, coinciding with the official exams coordinated by the directorate general of language policies.

The latest round of Catalan language instruction picks up where a similar course from October 2017-January 2018 left off. Council officials say the classes reflect the administration's goal of facilitating and promoting language study on the island. Efforts are made —scheduling lessons across a variety of days and hours, for example— to make it easier for students juggling employment or parenting as well.

Enrolment in the courses is free and plans are in place to organise two groups each at the A2, B1 and B2 levels and one group for students in the most advanced level, C1/C2. For more information, contact: sal@conselldeformentera.cat

Current number of children on waiting list at Formentera's escoletes: two

Foto escoleta formenteraThe education department of the Formentera Council has reported that the list of zero- to one-year-olds waiting to enter the island's two nursery schools, or escoletes, consists of just two names. The current number of children on the waiting lists for one- and two-year-olds and two- and three-year-olds? Zero.

So said Formentera's education secretary, Susana Labrador, who also assured that “the completion of Sant Ferran's new escoleta will mean that not a single child” goes without the service. In Labrador's words, the Council's objective is “zero wait list,” though she pointed out that enrolment stays open through the year, and the schools are able to quickly fill spots left empty at any point. At the moment, space is available for one- and two-year-olds and two- and three-year-olds and recently, late registration was requested for five newborns.

September 18 marked the start of the nursery school calendar. One hundred six children are enrolled across the island's two escoletes; 79 in sa Miranda and 27 at Escoleta des Camí Vell.
