New round of integration classes on Formentera

xi-edici-curs-integraci-social1The Formentera Council's social welfare department announces that from Monday October 22 to Friday November 2, islanders can sign up to take part in the eleventh round of social and cultural integration classes. Space is available for 15, and the twice-weekly lessons —a total of 20 hours of instruction from March 6-28— will take place in the large classroom of the Formentera adult learning centre.

Course content
The classes are mainly geared towards immigrants, particularly those wishing to renew their residence permit, prepare for the CCSE citizenship test or demonstrate integration during the early phases of their stay in Spain.

Topics covered will include Spain's constitutional values, human rights and civil liberties, the Balearic Statute of Autonomy, the European Union and gender equality, among others. The courses are aimed at familiarising students with the various subjects and helping them obtain the associated accreditation from the Balearic regional government.

Signups are open to all. Visit the social welfare department (àrea de Benestar Social) during normal office hours or phone them at 971 321 271.

Formentera's unprecedented 'equality plan' defines 53 actions to promote more equitable society

foto pla igualtat 2Yesterday the Formentera Council's social welfare department unveiled the island's very first “equality plan” before local community leaders in the Consell d'Entitats. Fruit not only of collaboration between distinct arms of the Council but also of the involvement of hometown associations and a broad array of community stakeholders, the strategic plan focuses on problems and needs specific to one group on the island in particular—women.

Social welfare department head Vanessa Parellada highlighted the plan's 13 objectives and all-encompassing 53 key measures, covering everything from promoting healthy work-family balance and non-gender-biased encouragement of leisure and sport to “creating a more egalitarian society and working to end gender violence”.

The first of its kind, the equality action plan arose from the findings of La Radial, a research and social-work group. It establishes five action areas (Work-family balance; Equal participation, leisure and free time; Towards a more egalitarian culture; Social care and gender violence; Incorporating a gender-based perspective at the Council level) as well as 13 goals and 53 key actions for the first four-year period. Each action area has an accompanying timeframe for completion based on progress during the four years.

With presentation before the Consell d'Entitats now complete, the strategic plan will be put to a vote in the October plenary session, followed by a public review period allowing islanders the opportunity to air comments.

Local events celebrating international breast cancer awareness day

foto AECC 2018 1Social welfare department head Vanessa Parellada sat down with Pepita Gabaldar, head of the Formentera branch of Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer, to unveil the activities programme that will commemorate the global awareness day for breast cancer on Friday October 19.

On Friday, AECC will put together a information stand in Sant Francesc's central square. A dinner that night at Hotel Cala Saona (€40 per plate) aims to raise money for AECC. Reservations can be made by calling 670 291 414 or 636 514 596. Evening entertainment will include music and a raffle with prizes donated by Teresa Matilla (a painting) and Enric Majoral (jewellery), two artists whom Gabaldar thanked for their contribution.

A fundraising walk to stop cancer is in the works for Saturday October 20. Participants will set out at 4.00pm from the fisherman's wharf (Moll de Pescadors) in La Savina. Registration costs €7 and walkers will receive a free T-shirt for participating.

For two days—this Wednesday and next Tuesday (October 16)—islanders can visit an information stand in Sant Francesc's town square in the morning or the island's fitness centre, Poliesportiu Antoni Blanc, in the evening, to register and get their T-shirts.

Oncological psychology
Parellada hailed the “enormous efforts” of Formentera's AECC chapter in expanding service at the local hospital. In December 2015, a psychologist specialised in oncology began visiting the island's hospital every Tuesday and Thursday to assist in the emotional, psychological and social aspects of treating cancer sufferers and their families.

AECC Formentera say they are looking ahead to a January of courses to improve the quality of care that volunteers give patients both in hospital and on home visits. Instruction will be provided by Palma-based specialists and the Formentera hospital's own in-house psycho-oncologist.

Formentera offers extra language help for schools' newest arrivals

foto acolliment ling 2018The Formentera Council's social welfare department reports that students can begin enrolment tomorrow, Friday October 5, for the latest round of “language integration” classes. Department head Vanessa Parellada and instructor/coordinator Maria Isabel Jiménez met today to unveil the project, aimed as a leg-up for recently arrived learners on the island.

Extra help for language learners
Given heightened rates of school failure and early school leaving among young immigrants, a potential hindrance to development in both the financial and social spheres, the immigration arm of the Council fashioned the present initiative as a way to offer support for some of the needs specific to that community.

Aims of assistance
Beginning October 15 and running through the school year, this year's programme purports to offer extra help to Formentera's newest arrivals at the primary and secondary level.

According to instructor/coordinator Maria Isabel Jiménez, “the classes are a resource for anyone who might benefit from improved reading, writing and oral comprehension in Catalan” and anyone in need of assistance meeting the levels required at schools.

The courses are seen as a way not only to improve classroom learning, but also to advance participants' social integration, for, in the words of Parellada, “proper integration in the schoolyard tends to mean good things for the entire family's success integrating”.

Adapted to the academic level of each student, instruction is meant to promote teamwork; level the playing field between students and foment positive attitudes among new students regarding Catalan, the working language at schools in the Balearics.

Signups
Enrolment for the courses will be handled at the social welfare department (conselleria de Benestar Social, vénda des Brolls, 53), Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 2.00pm. Enrolment opens this Friday October 5 and extends to Friday October 12.

More information is available by phoning 971 32 12 71 or emailing rescolar@conselldeformentera.cat

The location of classes will depend on the need and number of students registered.

Islanders can now obtain ID locally

foto DNI 1The Formentera Council announces there is now a place on the island where residents can renew or make a first request for a national ID card, or DNI, meaning islanders are no longer required to travel to Eivissa to handle the procedure.

Formenterers who wish to process DNI requests must visit the Casal d'Entitats next to the department of social welfare (conselleria de Benestar Social). An appointment must be made prior to such a visit, either by visiting the local police department in person, telephoning 971 32 22 01, or on the web at www.citapreviadni.es.
