Formentera struts stuff in Netherlands

Today and tomorrow, the Formentera Council Office of Tourism is working with Spain's national brand, Marca España, on two advertising initiatives in Utrecht, Netherlands. After a programme of two workshops for tourism and media professionals taking place this afternoon, tomorrow (Saturday) will come with efforts to promote Formentera as a tourist destination as part of “Día de España” (Spain Day) celebrations in the Dutch city.

Events on Saturday will include food sampling and musical performances in the street. CiF president and tourism chief Alejandra Ferrer pointed out that not only would island reps be on hand to field questions from potential visitors, but that “promotional activities are being lined up to spotlight the diverse range of experiences—gastronomical, cultural or health- and fitness-related—that travellers can enjoy on Formentera”. The local agents will also be touting the island's “natural draws” as well as the measures that have “earned Formentera a place on the cutting edge of sustainable tourism”.

Thursday marks start of fifth Formentera Jazz Festival—now more sustainable

foto-presentacio---for-jazz-fe1Acting councillor of tourism Alejandra Ferrer met with musician and cultural producer Maxwel Moya to unveil details about the fifth Formentera Jazz Festival. Moya is both the director and founder of the CiF-backed event, which is scheduled to take place at a host of sites across the island from Thursday to Sunday, 6-9 June.

Congratulating Moya on the festival's growing success, Ferrer linked the Council's support to wanting to give tourists extra incentives to come visit, “and filling out the cultural catalogue for islanders”.

Plastic-Free Festival
Festival organisers have worked out a deal with Plastic-Free Formentera to increase the sustainability of this year's gathering by setting up water fountains and serving drinks in recyclable cups. Plus, on Sunday at 5.00pm, the festival crew and any attendees keen to lend a hand will head to the beach at es Pujols to pick up micro-plastics.

Moya told festivalgoers to expect a Formentera Jazz Festival that is true to its roots, and made assurances that, though the event will still be a meeting of jazz veterans, there will be enough spotlight to go around for some of the other styles that have influenced jazz: hip-hop, funk, Latin jazz, Brazilian music, flamenco and even electronica.

Free festival
Besides being open to everyone and free to attend, the fifth Formentera Jazz Festival will play out across an array of stages. The kickoff, Thursday at 9.00pm at Blue Bar, will include a performance from Max Holm Trio. Ermanno Panta and Banda Zeitun will give a concert in Sant Francesc's plaça de la Constitució at the same time on Friday, with performances from Myriam at 11.00pm and DJ Uri Callejo at 12.30am. Saturday comes with one of the festival's newest features: a daytime concert by Ghost Seed (1.30pm) as part of an initiative called Picnic–Jazz. Then Perico Sambeat will play before crowds at the Sant Francesc square from 9.00pm, Tonina Saputo from 11.00pm and Midi Jazz Club and DJ D.Wattsriot from 12.30pm.

Jam session
Like every year, Formentera Jazz Festival devotes the final day of the festival to musicians on the island of all stripes—pros as well as amateurs—to come out for a giant jam session. The only rule? A jazz music axiom: improvisation. The session starts at 7.00pm on Sunday in Chezz Gerdi.

The complete activities programme is available at www.formenterajazzfestival.com.

The presentation of the Formentera Jazz Festival programme also included an intimate performance by Ermanno Panta, a Sicilian artist who lives on the island and will début his lastest effort, “Isla Musa”, to festival audiences.

fff-clausura--1-1The Formentera Council's office of culture reports that yesterday (Sunday May 19) marked the end of the sixth Formentera Film Festival. More than three hundred fans of short films, music and art came out every night of the four-day affair.

Last night filmmakers who had submitted productions and festivalgoers sat down for the FFF awards show, and enjoyed entertainment—from the Balearic symphonic orchestra's Palma Brass Movie Themes—designed to bring cinematic music to wider audiences. The FFF organising team—Viviana Carlet, Monica Timperi, Silvio Bandinelli and Carlo Migotto—took the stage with Xènia Fuertes to emcee the ceremony.

FFF's international panel of jurors presented the award for best film to:

This prize was created by artist Andrés Rodríguez

Collective Signatures' honourable mention went to:

Council unveils 'Formentera, a safe place to travel' pamphlets

foto-destinacio---segura prems1Today at 12 noon in the CiF Sala d'Actes, a team of individuals including the head of the CiF president's office and the councillor of tourism (Bartomeu Escandell and Alejandra Ferrer, respectively) as well as local police chief Félix Ramos and Enrique Gómez Bastida, the Guardia Civil's commander in the Pityuses, met before members of the press to unveil “Formentera, destinació segura” (Formentera, a safe place to travel).

President Ferrer said the outreach initiative's associated pamphlet covers the safety essentials for visiting tourists, not to mention smartphone apps to report a crime (AlertCops), online tools to file incident reports (“e-denuncies”) and important phone numbers and basic tips.

The brochure is being published in Castilian Spanish, Catalan and English, and is available online in the Useful information section of the island's portal for tourists: https://www.formentera.es/en/planning/useful-information/

Interpreting in 50 languages
The CiF tourism office has contracted Dualia, a service that provides interpreting in more than 50 languages. Said Ferrer: “One phone call is all it takes to obtain assistance in over 50 languages—24 hours a day, 365 days a year”.

The civil guard, local police, lifeguard and rescue services, tourist info spots and CiF emergency social work staff plan to use the system as well. Ferrer described Dualia as a way to “avoid slip-ups in translation, improve services for visitors and islanders who are still learning our language, and minimise incidents that stem from cultural differences”.

Those at the press conference pointed out that tourists will also need to sign up on the Guardia Civil's registry of overnight lodgers as an additional measure to improve local safety.

Security reinforcements
Commander Gómez pointed out that this summer special Guardia Civil security forces like SEPRONA and ROCA will be in place on the island. As in years past, an extra continent of traffic agents will be here, too.

President Escandell underscored that the local police force was preparing to expand its ranks to 16 this summer, with enough manpower to cover every shift. He additionally pointed to the formation of the administration's inspection team and brigade of blue zone parking attendants as key to freeing up law enforcement officers for other operations.

40 Formentera business owners take interest in strategic tourism sectors

reunio---set premsa1Today at 11.00am in the Formentera Council's Sala d'Actes, an information session was offered on the island's segments estratègics turístics, or “strategic tourism sectors” (SET). Tourism councillor Alejandra Ferrer explained the idea of the session as harnessing public-private collaboration to power diversification and create products to make Formentera-based businesses more competitive. Forty some representatives of private sector firms attended the event.

Chairpersons from the eight regional SETs—gastronomy, culture, active tourism, ecotourism, fitness tourism, health and fitness, luxury and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions)—gave presentations tracing their own experiences and encouraged local entrepreneurs to join the initiative.

Jaume Alzamora, managing director of the Balearic Agència Estratègia Turística, said that in 2019 the agency would contribute nearly three million across projects in management, supply support, destination improvement, taking product to market, innovation and competitivity.

Another €1.2 million from the Sustainable Tourism Levy has been earmarked for a project (the terms will be hammered out between the islands) to encompass promotional initiatives aimed at fuelling demand.

Participating local firms will have say in how the money is used and can make proposals on competitivity hacks, plus will have a hand in crafting the tourism activities and events programme.
