Es Pujols' Plaça d'Europa welcomes "50 fotografías con historia"

foto 2022 50 fotosAna Juan, President of the Consell de Formentera; Alejandra Ferrer, Vice President and Councillor of Tourism; Isabel Izquierdo, director of programming at Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), and Carlos Bernús, the local head of tourism promotion, presented "50 fotografías con historia", a display of 50 photographs from the last eighty years of our country. The exhibition is curated by José María Díaz-Maroto and Gonzalo Revidiego.

Vice President Ferrer thanked organisers for giving Formentera the chance to host an exhibition "of great historical importance" and invited residents and tourists to "visit it and get to know in an educational and artistic way a collection of snapshots from the last eight decades in our country".

Ms. Izquierdo explained that the exhibition, which is presented by the state-owned AC/E, "has met with rave reviews due to its quality and the breadth of topics shown, and because it brings together the most prominent names in Spanish photography of the twentieth century". With 50 images that tell 50 stories, "50 fotografías con historia" takes visitors on a visual journey from the Spanish Civil War to our world today. The exhibition has toured several Spanish cities.

The director of Formentera Fotogràfica asserted, "Bringing the AC/E's magnificent exhibition to the island in parallel with the tenth Formentera Fotogràfica is a point of pride. Many of the photographers who are part of this journey through the history of photography –Chema Madoz, Juan Foncuberta, Isabel Muñoz, Sandra Balsells, Juana Biarnés, Ricardo Casas, Cristina García Rodero, Alberto García-Alix, Cristina de Middel, Carlos Pérez-Siquier and Gervasio Sánchez– have also been integral to the life of the festival, so we are very excited to share this special edition with all of them again. Plus, this year we will welcome Chema Conesa and Ramon Masats, to whom we pay a well-deserved tribute on the centenary of Francesc Català-Roca".

The collective exhibition is on display in Es Pujols' Plaça d'Europa until 3 July. Seventeen of the featured photographers are also recipients of Spain's National Photography Prize. The exhibition offers visitors the chance to take a guided tour by using their mobile phones to scan the QR codes that accompany each photograph.

The exhibition is organised by AC/E, the Consell de Formentera and Formentera Fotogràfica, which this year celebrates its tenth anniversary on the island between 26 and 29 May.

Formentera qualifies a new master artisan and 5 new artisans

foto 2022 cartes artesanalsToday Ana Juan, President and Councillor of Commerce of the Consell de Formentera, and Alejandra Ferrer, Vice President, delivered six cartes d'artesania, or artisan cards, to islanders who successfully completed qualifying exams in October. Recipients include Hernán Gustavo Fernández, Master Artisan Jeweller; Yessica Camacho, Toys and Games Artisan; Maria Isabel Escandell, Costume Jewellery Artisan; Estefanía Hernández, Artisan Object Decorator; Beatriz Rivero, Artisan Jeweller, and Juan Zarco, Artisan Object Decorator.

President Juan congratulated the newly accredited craftworkers on their "efforts to train and grow in this trade, which speaks to the enthusiasm out there for crafts and wares made often by hand on Formentera". Juan noted that this year's exam was the first since 2017 and that it is the Consell's plan to continue giving local artisans the chance to attain accreditation. "Artisan markets are not only immensely valuable assets for tourism, but there is something distinctly Formentera about this modest industry; we need to take care of and promote it".

To receive their diploma, the individuals were evaluated by a panel of craftwork specialists of the Consell and master craftsmen and women. Examinees demonstrated production in their workshops to panel members, who asked practical questions about technique and process. Depending on whether they apply as artisans or master artisans, individuals must also show familiarity with basic notions of the craft, tools, equipment, the origin of the materials used, the process of preparation, handling, processing and finishing, as well as, among other subjects, safety and hygiene.

Today on Formentera there are 68 cardholding artisans, 11 master artisans and four honorary master artisans.

Second national promotional circuit takes Formentera to Malaga, Seville and Bilbao

foto 2022 ruta nacional turismeThe Formentera Office of Tourism reports that this week local representatives will take part in a second promotional circuit featuring several cities of mainland Spain with good air connections to reach our island. Monday 9 May in Málaga, Tuesday 10 May in Seville and Wednesday 11 May in Bilbao, promotional roadshows are being held for the national press, travel agents and representatives of the tourism sector.

Carlos Bernús, head of promotion, said, "As always, representatives' work will involve promoting pre- and post-season sports and cultural activities which are tuned to draw domestic visitors, and highlighting the island's heritage, nature trails, ornithological routes, eco-gastronomy and more". Bernús himself will participate in these actions. In late April, the first national promotional circuit of 2022 included roadshows in València, Barcelona and Madrid.

Promotion in London

At 12 noon Thursday 12 May in the Green House Hotel of London, a presentation before some twenty members of the sustainability and tourism press will be geared towards reaching end readers with high purchasing power.

Then, Sunday 15 May, forty-one European travel agents will visit the island on a familiarisation, or "fam trip", which Bernús said was designed to "encourage participants to promote our destination by showing the friendliest side of the island in low season".

Second year of Formentera Astronòmica shows tourists and residents the best of the island's night sky

foto 2022 fa CThe Formentera Office of Tourism is pleased to report that this weekend the island welcomed the second Formentera Astronòmica. Approximately 100 adults, including residents and tourists, joined some of the activities organised during the festival and discovered part of the exciting universe of the stars.

Children's activities were also very well attended. Over the course of the weekend 500 children made crafts and visited the planetarium in Sant Francesc's Plaça de la Constitució, where an astrophysicist expert in astronomy education talked to children about the cosmos.

Vice President Ferrer expressed her satisfaction with the event, which was enthusiastically received by visitors and local star lovers alike. Formentera's low light pollution makes the island an ideal place to enjoy the night sky, and Ferrer pointed out that Formentera had begun steps to become a "Starlight" destination, a network of the best places in the world for stargazing.

Programme

The daytime part of the event, in Sant Francesc, included talks in a hotel and workshops in Plaça de la Constitució. The nocturnal part was carried out in several natural places with little light pollution. Apart from a melding with gastronomy that included two themed dinners with stargazing, participants travelled into space through telescopes and took part in a night photography workshop. Javier Aranda, an acclaimed, Michelin-starred chef, cooked with local chef Juan Exojo at a dinner with journalists and speakers.

The Formentera Astronomical Association (AAF) once again collaborated in the event. Two night observations of the cosmos were carried out with the help of new AAF telescopes.
