In Barcelona, Formentera pitched as destination for families

foto-fira-barcelona1The Formentera Council's tourism department reports that from today to Sunday March 24 local reps will be at Barcelona's Montjuïc fairgrounds promoting the island at the B-Travel expo. Two tourist canvassers will present Formentera as a family destination that can be visited 365 days a year.

Formentera has its own stand with promotional material spotlighting heritage, nature, culture, gastronomy and the full spread of fitness events organised on the island at the beginning and end of the season.

Figuring among the promotional fare is information about a new marine museum (and future tenant of la Mola's lighthouse), the first edition of the book "Sabores de Formentera" and the latest version of the smartphone app "Formentera 365", which features complete information about the island.

Catalonia is one of Formentera's chief sources of tourism.

Submissions to Beni Trutmann photo contest's 17th edition now accepted

foto bTRUTMANN 2019 3The Formentera Council's Office of Culture reports that today until April 12, submissions —either in person at the Citizen Information Office (OAC) or by certified mail directly to the Formentera Council— will be accepted to the Beni Trutmann photo competition. Entering into its seventeenth year, the contest has become a fixture on the island.

The photo contest is a tribute to Beni Trutmann, a prodigious Swiss photographer who fell in love with Formentera on a visit and went on to spend 44 years on the island, during which time he took upwards of thirty thousand photos, each a demonstration of his love for the island and its natural spaces. It is the reason the Beni Trutmann photo contest is all about nature —landscapes, fauna and humans interacting in the outdoors— and defending our environment.

Colour/Black & White
In the Colour and Black & White categories, participants can submit up to three prints (analog or digital) in square, digital, classic and panorama format. Contestants must also state which prize—first, second or third, with cash prizes of €500, €300 and €200, respectively—they wish to compete for.

Social justice photography
This year, organisers have added a new category —fotodenúncia— for photography that is political in nature, seeking to denounce injustices, demand change or encourage reflection on a particular environmental issue. Cash prizes for the first-, second- and third-place winners are €500, €300 and €200, respectively.

Smart shots
Tuned for youth aged 12 to 18, another category that has become increasingly established with time is for photos snapped with smartphones. These submissions can be emailed to concursfoto@conselldeformentera.cat. Contestants are asked to include no more than three photos taken with their smartphone.

Jury
As every year, a panel of judges will be made up of a spokesperson from the local chapter of the Balearic association for birdwatching and the defence of nature; one representative of the local chapter of Obra Cultural Balear; three individuals renowned for their work in the visual arts; plus a president and secretary.

Winning submissions will be included in Formentera's image and sound archive, the AISF, and become property of the Council, which reserves the right to reproduce them as it deems fit (on posters, signs, internet-based campaigns, etc), though not for profit.

History
In its 17 years, the competition has amassed a valuable archive of roughly 1,200 photos from 300 participants. No better proof of the contest's growth can be found than the participation of photographers from as far away as mainland Spain and other countries in Europe.

CiF culture and patrimony councillor Susana Labrador encouraged islanders to trawl their boxes of old photos or “walk the island, camera in hand, and be ready—absolutely anyone can be in the right place and right time and snap a classic”. Highlighting the youth category, Labrador called on young islanders in particular to scour the island —personal phone (or their parents') in hand— and dive right into photography.

Exhibit and awards
Capping Beni Trutmann is an exhibit of selected photo submissions at the Sala d'Exposicions (Ajuntament Vell) through May 11. The show opens Monday, April 29, when there will also be a ceremony to deliver prizes to the seventeenth edition's winning photographers. Photography's leading lights to rendezvous on island for seventh Formentera Fotogràfica

foto-forfotogra--fica-31The Formentera Council's tourism office wishes to announce details about the seventh Formentera Fotogràfica. Over five days from April 28 to May 1, the island will become a haven for veterans and amateurs of photography. The programme covers conferences, workshops, documentary screenings, portfolio reviews and an array of cultural activities. Department chair Alejandra Ferrer highlighted the “remarkable trajectory of a festival known for bringing some of photography's biggest names under one roof on the island”.

Guest speakers
As ever, Formentera Fotogràfica will be a chance for attendees to get an up-close look at a run of photo experts reputed in Spain and around the world. Fourteen special guest photographers are scheduled to attend: Ricardo Cases, co-founder of Fiesta Ediciones, publishers of nine books; Pau Coll, winner of Agència EFE's Objetivo Abierto and member of Ruido Photo; Ricky Dávila, “visual poet” and director of CFC Bilbao; Jesús M. García Flores, National Geographic winner and creator of PhotoeXperience4U; Cristina García Rodero, multiple award-winning documentary photographer and member of Magnum Photos; David Jimenez, one of Spain's top names in photobooks; Francesc Melcion, photojournalist for Diari Ara; Antonio Moreno Salmoral, astro-photographer and AEFONA member; Martin Parr, member and former chair of Magnum Photos; Tanit Plana, image educator and visual activist; Edu Ponces, photojournalist member of Ruido Photo; Silvia Prió, visual artist and documentary photographer; Eugenio Recuenco, pacemaker in Spanish fashion and advertising photography; Antonio M. Xoubanova, member of Blank Paper involved in publishing and other projects.

Exhibit
This year's festival also features a groundbreaking hosting of the photo show Backway. Under the subtitle “Through Europe's back door from Africa”, the exhibit is a project of the Ruido Photo collective and aims to shed light on the motivations of migrants and human rights abuses. The show will take up residence at Sant Francesc's plaça de la Constitució.

Conferences will take place at the town's cinema, while other activities will unfold at a range of open-air sites across the island—Constitució square, the la Mola lighthouse, Estany Pudent, Estany des Peix and more.

Photographer and festival director Francesc Fàbregas continues his longstanding committment to contemporary visual forms of expression that are not only diverse but also of premier quality. The programme is envisioned more as an ode to eclectism than a fixed homage to one subject in particular. Formentera Fotogràfica is the ideal place to share knowledge and experience in a relaxed environment where high-quality instruction and a friendly atmosphere are key pillars. Fàbregas underlines the goal of remaining true to the festival's small-scale beginnings, and that the icing on the cake is the close contact that exists between photographers, industry pros, festival participants and organisers.

Formentera touts itself to Berliners as sustainable destination

foto-itb-formentera1The Formentera Council's department of tourism will be promoting the island at Berlin's ITB travel expo through Sunday March 10. Department chief Alejandra Ferrer travelled to the city to present Formentera to expo-goers as an island where sustainability reigns.

The CiF councillor spoke to members of niche press outlets about pioneering sustainability strategies being deployed on Formentera. She talked about the forthcoming initiative to regulate vehicle ingress, the Save Posidonia Project and “the importance of safeguarding our sea and scenery”, which Ferrer called “mainstays of the island's tourist appeal”.

The tourism chief pointed out that Formentera's economy is “100 per cent tourism-based” and affirmed: “That's why the balance between protecting the land, wellbeing of islanders and working our competitive edge over other destinations is so crucial”. Getting there will require Formentera develop an identity which sets it apart from the crowd: “We've got to showcase those features that make us unique—gastronomy, culture, traditions, heritage and the list goes on”.

'Discover Formentera'
Ferrer also talked to ITB attendees about Descobreix Formentera, a push to attract visitors in May and October (that is, before or after the traditional season) with a chock-a-block slate of fitness and cultural programming. She reckoned German tourism is “part of Formentera's lifeblood”, reasoning that travellers from the country “tend not only to be keen on the outdoors and environmentally conscious, but also favour extended periods of family travel outside the high season”.

Formentera shares its promotional space at ITB with the other Balearic islands. An island rep is on hand at the stand to talk about Formentera's main draws and play up features like the local network of nature trails (rutes verdes) and opportunities for outdoor family activities, such as guided bird-watching circuits.

Other expos
Friday March 8 marks the start of Saló Mahana in Lyon (France), where Formentera will share a stand with Menorca's tourism office. Ferrer said recent efforts to expand promotional efforts in France are a reflection of how travellers from the country have become a priority.

This week Formentera is also taking part in its first Expo Sports Outdoor in Barcelona, part of efforts to promote off-season fitness events on the island.
