This November, Consell presents series of workshops to boost local trade

As part of this year's Strengthening Local Business Plan (Pla per a l'enfortiment del comerç, PEC), the Formentera Office of Commerce will deliver a boost to local business in a series of workshops this November. Ana Juan, president and councillor of commerce, said the aim of the workshops is "to give Formentera merchants new tools and ideas to enhance their skills".

Focalizza, a consultancy specialised in business development, will develop the PEC and lead the online workshops. The first, Digital competencies and skills for managing a point of sale, will take place 7 and 9 November. Marketing strategies for managing a point of sale will be staged 14 and 16 November, with the third and final workshop, Ten ways to build customer loyalty locally, scheduled 21 and 23 November.

All workshops will be held online from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. For more information and to register, send an email to mercats@conselldeformentera.cat or telephone 971 321 275 ext. 2.

The strategic lines of Formentera's PEC include fomenting business planning; enhancing the competitivity of island businesses; preserving a locally-driven model, and promoting and regulating the local commercial landscape. President Juan recalled that the PEC's preparation and development "reflects the suggestions and concerns of the island's business community".

With VR videos, Formentera reclaims slice of local history

foto 2022x ca na costaToday the Formentera Office of Tourism unveiled augmented virtual reality (VR) videos on Ca Na Costa, a megalithic sepulchre, and the history of the island's salt flats, part of an effort to use 3D virtual reconstruction to safeguard and share part of local history.

"The aim of this initiative", which Alejandra Ferrer, vice president and councillor of tourism, pointed out would be deployed in other heritage and historical sites, "is to transport visitors to another era, recreating the environment. With the help of mobile technology, we will be able to see in the present what life was like in the past". She called it "yet another tool to attract visitors in the off season and offer a range of activities that bring participants closer to our roots".

The initiative has benefited from the collaboration of the island's heritage office and historian Santiago Colomar, who have helped by contributing historical information. "These videos bring our history closer to residents and visitors and underscore this part of our heritage", said Colomar. In that regard, Colomar hopes that the initiative will continue in order to "uncover more stories of our past".

Carlos Bernús, who heads Formentera's Office of Tourism Marketing, explained that the videos will be promoted on the local tourism website, Tourist Information Points and promotional events.  They can also be found on the Formentera Office of Tourism's YouTube channel in Catalan, Spanish and English.

Formentera attends second Turespaña Convention and plans summer 2023 promotion

foto 2022x convencio tourespanaToday the Formentera Office of Tourism is present at the second Turespaña Convention, on tourism governance, taking place at the Barcelona International Convention Centre between 3 and 5 October. The first two days of the fair included presentations and round tables on tourism news, best practices, sustainability and market intelligence. The Tourism Institute of Spain (Turespaña) also offered attendees a preview of the planning for the coming year.

Wednesday 5 October, heads of the Secretariat of State for Tourism (SETUR) and Turespaña, together with foreign tourism ministers, will hold technical meetings with representatives of tourist destinations. Formentera's head of tourism marketing, Carlos Bernús, will meet with 35 of these representatives to present the island as a destination and plan marketing activities for 2023.

Gatherings included foreign tourism ministers from Scandinavian countries, India, Singapore, Tokyo, Bombay and New York, as well as from Italy, France and Germany, among others. "With guidance from Turespaña agents, these meetings help us steer marketing efforts for next season, determine where we should strengthen our presence, and reduce costs by seeking out joint marketing efforts", Bernús explained.

Bernús also spoke to individuals in Turespaña's knowledge and research department about the work being done at Formentera's data observatory to improve coordination with state representatives and develop a strategic plan in accordance with the 2030 Agenda.

To help lengthen season, Formentera touts island's off-season appeal

foto 2022ix agents viatgeThe Formentera Office of Tourism is pleased to report that since last week, an effort has been under way to promote the island's pre- and post-season charms among journalists and travel agents.

"The goal is to promote the island in October and the other months of the low season", explained Alejandra Ferrer, vice president and councillor of tourism. Press trips were held in the second half of September involving journalists from niche media outlets in France and travel agents in Holland, France, the UK, Germany, the Nordic countries and USA.

Participants toured Formentera's main beaches and Ses Salines Park, visited the markets, went on wine tastings and discovered local gastronomy, heritage and culture. They also enjoyed sports and leisure activities, among others. "Our visitors got a first-hand look at the many possibilities apart from sun and beach that Formentera offers", said Ferrer, "and heard about the importance of protecting the local environment and the various projects we have under way".

Also on hand was a representative from Asia and the Pacific who will promote Formentera in Japan, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. "Visitors from these markets can help extend our season and average length of stay", Ferrer asserted, reasoning that travellers in those areas "make longer trips and are interested in activities that can be done outside the summer season". Ferrer also praised local business owners for their collaboration with this initiative.
