Formentera Jazz Festival presents complete 1–4 June programme

cartell 2023v FJFThe Office of Culture and Office of Tourism of the Consell de Formentera are pleased to report that the Formentera Jazz Festival will celebrate its 11th year from 1 to 4 June, with ground zero of the 2023 programme Plaça de la Constitució in Sant Francesc. When organisers first launched FJF with backing from the Consell de Formentera in 2015, they imagined the event as open musical encounter in the world of jazz and dreamed of showcasing various genres and backgrounds and drawing residents and tourists alike.

Alejandra Ferrer, vice president and tourism councillor, encouraged all of Formentera, and visitors too, to enjoy this free festival. Meanwhile, Vanessa Parellada, culture councillor, underscored FJF's "undisputed position as purveyors of quality music that brings musical culture to everyone".

FJF director Maxwell Wright shared his satisfaction with the final programme of world-class artists, who will offer a unique and unforgettable musical experience.

The festival kick-off happens Thursday 1 June at 8.30pm in Molí de Sal with a performance from Ana Rossi Trio. Advance bookings are required as seating is limited. Please call 971187491. Friday and Saturday, the two central days of the festival, Sant Francesc's Plaça de la Constitució will be the scene of performances from Alejandro Delange, Monkeyd Doo, Oscuro, Duquende, Ay Trick and Sonido Tupinamba. FJF's closing event comes Sunday 4 June, with a jam-session at Chezz Gerdi in Es Pujols. Also on Sunday, at 5.00pm, all are invited to join a symbol of organisers' sought-after sustainability: a plastics cleanup of the beach in Es Pujols.

Formentera is promoted at Expovacaciones travel expo in Bilbao

foto 2023v expovacas AToday through Sunday 7 May, the Office of Tourism of the Consell de Formentera will promote the island at the Expovacaciones travel expo in Bilbao. "Easy, direct connections and the hankering of travellers in northern Spain for beach destinations that contrast with their local offer" were behind what Carlos Bernús, the island's marketing chief, described as the "enormous amount of interest received by Formentera at the expo".

Visitors to Formentera's stand see the best of local gastronomy and can even take part in wine tastings. Nature trails and birdwatching routes are promoted too, not to mention all the activities that can be carried out on the island outside the high season, which can be consulted on the May activities poster on the Office of Tourism website. Media outlets like Onda Vasca, a radio station, and local television in Bilbao will also broadcast the island's offer.

Additional marketing operations are being carried out this week on Formentera. A team of journalists from the magazine Telva and the Destinos supplement in El Periódico de Catalunya, "who want to see in situ the opportunities that Formentera offers visitors in the low season", added Bernús. On Sunday, the "Gente Viajera" programme will be broadcast live to the listeners of national broadcaster Onda Cero.

Formentera stages first-ever tourist guide course

foto 2023v curs guia turisticThe Office of Tourism of the Consell de Formentera is pleased to report that a training course for the tourism sector in which 27 people have enrolled has started this week. The course prepares participants to take the exams to obtain accreditation as tourist guides in the Balearic Islands. This is the first time that the course is held on Formentera and it has been tailored for participants who are not seeking accreditation, but who wish to improve their general knowledge of Formentera to better support the island's visitors.

Alejandra Ferrer, vice president and tourism councillor, shared her satisfaction that "for the first time we can offer this Formentera-specific training and thus have guides offering quality care to visitors and achieving employment".

Employers and workers can also take a module of general knowledge and obtain a Consell de Formentera-issued certificate that will help holders apply for benefits, take part in promotions on the Office of Tourism website, and be considered for recruitment in marketing activities. This course will take place afternoons in May and can be taken in person or online.

Exams for official guides of the Balearic Islands will be held 30 May. Twenty-one people have applied.

Pianist Alessandro Martire unveils new music video inspired by and filmed at lighthouses of Formentera

foto 2023v pianoThe Office of Tourism of the Consell de Formentera is pleased to announce that pianist and composer Alessandro Martire released a video of his new song "Faro de la Isla" today. Martire says that not only was the music inspired by Formentera lighthouses, they are also where the video was shot: La Mola lighthouse at sunrise, and Es Cap de Barbaria lighthouse at sunset.

Video for "Faro de la Isla"

Martire traced his decision to his love of "these inspiring places and their incredible nature". For the occasion, he brought the same Waves piano with which he gave a concert in Sant Francesc's Plaça de la Constitució last summer. The Office of Tourism Promotion has supported this project that associates the island with creativity, music, nature and tranquility.

Since 2021, Alessandro Martire has cultivated an original format with his Waves piano and shot video clips in natural locations like glaciers, frozen lakes, rivers and 3,000-metre-high mountains. Some of his other creations can be seen here.

The pianist and composer was born in Cuomo, Italy in 1992, and composed his first song at the age of 15. Inspiration for his songs is drawn from both classical and contemporary music.

Calendar of activities and events for month of May

foto 2023v agenda activa CThe Office of Tourism of the Consell de Formentera has put together a brochure of all the cultural, sports and active tourist activities on the island during the month of May. "In this way, we give visitors a guide where they can quickly find everything Formentera has to offer in the low season", said Alejandra Ferrer, vice president and tourism councillor.

A forthcoming activities calendar will focus on all the leisure options offered by the island's administration, associations and businesses--not to mention details on open accommodations and restaurants--toward the end of the high season. As Ferrer put it, "the ultimate goal is to have a programme with proposals covering 365 days a year". All this information will be included in a section of the Office of Tourism website and will be available at tourist information offices, as well as on social media, fairs and other promotions.

Activities agenda
The Consell's May tourist agenda features information and contacts with companies specialised in bicycle excursions, wine tasting, scuba diving, sailing boat rentals, horseback riding, wellness and health activities, birdwatching and environmental walks, gastronomic circuits, and more. It also includes the cultural and sports agenda.

"The idea is to foment year-round activities related to the natural environment, sports and culture; activities that promote the circular economy and diversification, and, at the same time, encourage local businesses to grow this offer. Programming like this is the best way to raise the island's profile", concluded the councillor.
