More than 200 expected for 4th Formentera Triathlon

foto presentacio iv triatloFormentera's councillor of sport, Jordi Vidal, appeared today in the plenary hall of the Formentera Council to announce details regarding the fourth year of Formentera's triathlon, which is slated for Saturday October 8 in es Pujols. Vidal was joined by his department's staff specialist, Daniel de la Dueña, as well as Núria de la Torre, a representative from Trasmapi, a company that is sponsoring the sports event.

Next Saturday between 220 and 230 triathletes —over 50 more than last year's event— will take part in three trials: olympic, sprint and a group trial. At 2.30pm sprint and group participants will set out on a 750-metre swim in the es Pujols bay, followed by 20 km by cycling ride and, lastly, a 5-km run. Participants of the olympic trial will start at 4.15pm with a 1,500-m swim, then move on to a 40-km bike ride and a 10-km run.

Interested individuals have until Thursday to sign up on the elitechip website, or additionally have the option of registering the Saturday of the event between 9.30am and 1.00pm in es Pujols' plaça d'Europa. Participants' numbers will also be handed out at that time.

Traffic interruptions
Between 2.50 and 7.00pm the road that links es Pujols and la Savina will be closed to traffic up to Ses Illetes. Councillor Vidal presented his apologies to island residents, who will need to use alternate routes during that time.

Vidal also thanked Trasmapi for its sponsorship of the triathlon —included as part of Discover Formentera in October, a bid to attract off-season tourists— for the fourth year running. He also expressed his gratitude to the Guardia Civil, local police and all the other volunteers whose contribution will make the event possible.

Fitness centre closed for maintenance

tasques manteniment facanaThe Office of Sport of the Formentera Council has announced the Antoni Blanc sports centre will once again open its doors to islanders September 12. Operations at the centre will cease for the first two weeks of the month to allow for maintenance. CiF sports councillor Jordi Vidal reported crews would clean the building's façade, disinfect changing rooms, the swimming pool and other areas and regulate chlorine in water at the centre.

Maintenance workers will also conduct a revision and inventory of lockers and other material at the centre. They will take time to refit old tiles and repaint part of the building's interior. The work will be done by Council staff and outside contractors. “These are things that can only be done when the fitness centre is empty,” said Vidal, who underscored the importance of such regular upkeep both for maintenance and hygiene reasons while apologising for the inconvenience it might cause.

The Antoni Blanc centre will re-open for sports centre and pool activities next Monday. Classes and timetables can be consulted here: http://www.consellinsulardeformentera.cat/images/stories/Horaris_poliesportiu_piscina/HORARIS_POLIESPORTIU_ANTONI_BLANC_imprimir.jpg

Council adds three big-name consultants to sports values roster

signatura esports 03 19 agost 2016The Formentera Council's Office of Sport has signed three sponsorship deals with athletes Mateo Sanz, Ricard Marí and Óscar Santos. The three sportsmen, who will take on a consulting role in a Council programme to promote values in sport, agree to wear clothing emblazoned with Formentera graphics at their competitive meets. In turn, they will receive money from the Council to foster their continued participation in high-level competitions.

Windsurfer Mateo Sanz, who recently became the first Formentera local to compete in the Olympic games, will receive €10,000. Another €2,000 will go to Ricard Marí, a triathlete from the island who on October 8 will participate in the most long-standing and prestigious of the Ironman competitions, on Hawaii. This February local runner Óscar Santos snagged the bronze medal in Turkey's European junior cross-country racing championship. Santos will also receive sponsorship from the Council in the amount of €2,000.

As Jordi Vidal, CiF sports councillor, put it: “These athletes are living proof that if you work hard and stick with it you can make it all the way to the highest level competitions, even starting out from a little island like ours”. Local youth, mused Councillor Vidal, will no doubt be closely tracking the paths of the three sportsmen.

Pupils awarded certificates for school swimming classes

Diplomes piscinaThe Formentera Council Office of Sport has announced that tomorrow, June 22, report cards and medals will be handed out to island students for participation in swimming classes during the 2015-2016 school year. Three hundred pupils, from primary schools Mestre Lluís Andreu, Virgen Milagrosa and El Pilar de la Mola, got swimming instruction under the programme. Others, Mestre Lluís and IES Marc Ferrer students who participated in adapted swimming, have received their awards over the last few days.

The classes went all year, from September to June, in once-a-week 30-minute sessions at the municipal pool. Organisers are hoping to push forward next year with even higher quality instruction; with an eye to expanding work on basic motor skills, classes will be lengthened 15 minutes. Swimming instruction is offered to early-learning students in stages of motor skill development, a process which is underpinned by movement both on land and in water.
