New car park in vicinity of Sant Ferran school

foto-aparcament-sant-ferran-1-1The Formentera Council's mobility department announces the opening of a new parking area in the school zone in Sant Ferran. The 1,200-square-metre lot has room for roughly 40 vehicles and is located at the intersection of carrer Tarragona and the main highway.

Mobility chief Rafael González described it as “a supply of available parking on the east side of avinguda Joan Castelló i Guasch while work on the remodel is under way” and “a way to facilitate parking when classes in Sant Ferran begin and let out”.

González called attention to the large stock of parking spaces at the other end of the avenue alongside the ring road. The Formentera Council is renting the land where the new car park sits for €500/month (VAT included).

Two-way traffic resumes on la Savina road

foto-doble-sentit-carrer-del-c2The Formentera Council's mobility office reports that la Savina's carrer del Carme reopened to two-way vehicle traffic this morning, enabling entry and exit to the east end of the town's port and leaving Passeig de la Marina as an exclusively pedestrian area.

Carrer del Carme was a two-way road until it was equipped with “blue zone” parking spaces in 2015 and became one-way only. In addition to necessary traffic signage, new road surface markings were painted in yellow to signal the change; crews will repaint them white when work on the adjacent passeig, or promenade, is complete.

Balearic Port Authority is overseeing the second phase of the la Savina port's full remodel, which includes transforming removing car traffic from that part of the port and making Passeig de la Marina a pedestrian-only space from carrer del Vapor Manolito to carrer del Carme.

foto reforma sferran antesdespres 2The Formentera Council's infrastructure office announces that Monday January 7 will see the first part of a road improvements project on avinguda Joan Castelló i Guasch in Sant Ferran. Initial work will mean relaying the avenue from the ring-road roundabout to the turnoff at carrer Guillem de Montgrí (remodelled last winter).

Following a tying off of the area on Monday, work will begin on the northern pavement between carrer Guillem de Montgrí and carrer València. Parking will not be available while construction is under way but businesses are advised that, in order to ensure stores can stay open, pedestrian access will be left unaffected. Normal traffic flow in both directions will also continue unperturbed.

The remodel includes repaving, widening pedestrian walkways, eliminating architectural barriers, undergrounding services like sanitation, drinking water, telephone, electricity and street lights as well as general street improvements. The upgrades will be familiar to improvements last winter carrers Guillem de Montgrí and València.

A new dedicated bike lane and electric vehicle recharge points are other standout features of plans.

The second phase of work, scheduled for next winter, will effect the stretch of road from Guillem de Montgrí to the school. The remodel's total price-tag is 1.9 million euros.

Island welcomes rescheduling of last Formentera-bound ferry

foto port-de-la-savina-barquesThe Formentera Council's mobility office hails the choice of 9.30pm as the latest ferry trip from Eivissa to Formentera on weekdays.

Mobility councillor Rafael González thanked transport company Trasmapi for rescheduling the last journey out of Eivissa's port, Vila, which he said made the move “in response to the requests of islanders and the Council”. González described the retooled ferry service as “an improvement in terms of Formentera residents' mobility, not least for islanders that take the ferry for work, school or medical reasons, or to make connections through the airport”.

González also noted the service tweak means alignment with legislation known as the Llei de Transport Marítim ("Martime Transport Act", 11/2010) mandating transport options from Eivissa to Formentera at least until 9.30pm.
