Formentera celebrates regional holiday with official event, traditional dance, music, theatre and women's day charity race

Today Ana Juan, president of the Consell de Formentera, and Vanessa Parellada, culture councillor, presented the programme of events for Day of the Balearic Islands (Dia de les Illes Balears) on Formentera. The activities bill was organised through agreements between the Balearic Government and the island councils, which allow each island administration to programme the most appropriate, and locally-rooted, activities.

On Formentera, President Juan explained that, per tradition, "the administration's official 1 March celebration will come with a demonstration from local dance troupes." She encouraged all of Formentera to enjoy the festivity and the activities organised.

Councillor Parellada reviewed the events that have been teed up, including stage performances, concerts and fundraising run for women's day. The councillor of culture said various entities had been "essential to this year's programme", pointing up the wide-ranging collaboration of "musicians, dancers, individuals driven by a sense of solidarity and local athletes."

Wednesday 1 March, Dia de les Illes Balears
Formentera's official Dia de les Illes Balears celebration will take place in Plaça de la Constitució from 12 noon. President Juan will offer a speech, and local dance groups Es Xacoters and Es Pastorells will handle entertainment.

At 8.30pm, Àlvar Triay will present the play Nomeolvides in the Sala de Cultura (Cinema). Triay's most intimate work shows that culture can also be a path to personal and collective liberation. More than just about mourning, the play shines a light on childhood memories and awakenings that tap into the emotions of the crowd.

Tickets are available one week before the show on www.entradesformentera.cat for €7. Unemployed people, under-employed freelancers, retirees, under-25s, people with functional diversity, single-parent families and large families pay half price.

Saturday 4 March
At 7.30pm, Ibizan artist Àngela Cervantes will present Arrels d'Ara in the Sala de Cultura (Cinema). One of the Pine Islands' most internationally acclaimed voices joins the great Catalan double bass player Manel Fortià, and together they perform a mix of traditional island melodies and songs by Maria de la Mar Bonet and Aires Formenterencs.

Tickets are available one week before the show on www.entradesformentera.cat for €7. Unemployed people, under-employed freelancers, retirees, under-25s, people with functional diversity, single-parent families and large families pay half price.

Sunday 12 March
The Women's Charity Run (Cursa Solidària per la Dona) turns nine. The fundraising walk-run cut a unique 8K path starting and finishing at Plaça de la Constitució. Proceeds from registration fees (€10) will be donated to the Spanish Cancer Association (AECC). Participants will receive a free T-shirt on registering. Visit Antoni Blanc Sports Centre during regular hours to sign up. This race is organised by the Consell de Formentera, AECC, Espai Dones and Grup Esportiu Espalmador. From 2.00pm that same day, a large community paella will be held in the festival tent at Sa Senieta car park. Proceeds from the meal, which is priced at €15 for adults and €8 for children twelve and under, will also go to the AECC.
