Consell de Formentera President Ana Juan and Vice President Alejandra Ferrer were joined today by the President of the Formentera chapter of the Spanish Cancer Association (AECC), Pepita Gabalda, and Ivan Tolsa, spokesman for Spain's glass recycling entity, Ecovidrio, in presenting 'Recicla vidrio por ellas' (Recycle glass for them) – an initiative which is backed by local government and Ecovidrio in association with the Govern balear and the Sandra Ibarra Foundation on the occasion of World Breast Cancer Day.
The push aims to encourage islanders to recycle glass to preserve the environment and at the same time help advance a good cause: preventing breast cancer. For the next few weeks starting today, two pink containers will be set up in Plaça de la Constitució in Sant Francesc, with Ecovidrio pledging to transform collected glass bottles into a donation to the Sandra Ibarra Foundation to support cancer solidarity.
In 2020, the most recent year for which data are available, Formentera residents recycled a total of 670 tonnes of glass, or on average of 56.3 kg per person.
