Photo tribute to rural women of Formentera settles into La Mola lighthouse

cartell 2020 dona rural far molaThe photo exhibit Homenatge a la dona de Formentera en el món rural (Tribute to Formentera’s rural woman) has taken up residence in the Far de la Mola gallery space, a location that will open for visits 10.00am to 2.00pm from this Thursday (Tuesdays to Saturdays). The display was previously on view in the inner courtyard of Sant Francesc’s Centre Antoni Tur “Gabrielet”.

Dated between 1950 and present day and kept at the Consell’s image and sound archive, Arxiu d’Imatge i So, the 25 prints in the selection capture rural Formentera women in an array of situations. Credited photographers include Pere Català i Roca, Helga Sittl, Melba Levick, Rafael Bataller i Giralt and individuals that have contributed prints to past editions of the Beni Trutmann photo contest.

Backed by the Formentera Agriculture Department, the exhibit explores the full range of occupations tended to by rural women of the island — part of a bid to commemorate Rural Women’s Day on 15 October. Culture councillor Susana Labrador said the move to the La Mola lighthouse was “for those who hadn’t yet had a chance to check out the display”, and encouraged visitors to “stop in at the exhibit on the island’s maritime past”.
