Consell offers new round of Catalan courses

The Formentera Language Advisory Service is pleased to announce that a new run of language courses will help islanders prepare for official Catalan exams hosted by the regional government this May. Sign-ups for the courses start 2 March and end 11 March. In this second tranche, nine face-to-face courses will be offered at various levels –two A2, two B1, two B2, two C1 and one C2– in the morning and afternoon. C2 will be offered based on demand, and scheduling will be announced when registration is complete.

Free courses, limited places

These courses are free of charge, and groups will accommodate up to 25. Once the registration is completed, aspiring students will receive an e-mail confirming their application and all the necessary information to start the course. The courses will observe all current public health measures.

Classes are scheduled to start on Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 March. The end of classes will depend on exact dates of the May exams, to be announced by the Balearic Office of Language Policy (Direcció General de Politica Lingüística, DGPOLING). Registration for the exams starts 17 March and ends 30 March. Complete details, including information about dates, are available on the DGPOLING website.

Registration for any of the courses can be done online through the Virtual Citizen Information Office (Oficina Virtual d'Atenció a la Ciutadania, OVAC) and in person at the Citizen Information Office (Oficina d'Atenció a la Ciutadania, OAC) located at Carrer Ramon Llull, 6, in Sant Francesc.

19th Beni Trutmann Photo Contest now accepting submissions

The Formentera Office of Culture is pleased to report that submissions to the Beni Trutmann Photography Contest are now being accepted. Photos can be submitted until 12 April. This year the contest, a benchmark event in local photography, turns 19.

Susana Labrador, Councillor of Culture, described the contest as "a tribute to this extraordinary Swiss photographer who loved Formentera, where he lived 44 years and left more than 30,000 photographs that show his love for the island and its natural world". "That is why Formentera –its landscapes, flora and fauna, culture, heritage and humans in interaction– is central to the contest", she confided. "The goal is to highlight a commitment to protecting and preserving the island," said the councillor, "and to encourage islanders and visitors alike to participate".

Colour, Black and White and Social Justice

In the Colour, Black and White and Social Justice categories, participants may submit up to three photographs. Prints may be square, digital, classic or panoramic and will be eligible for the first, second and third prize in each category (€500, €300 and €200, respectively).

Submissions in these first three categories may be taken to the Citizen Information Office (Oficina d'Atenció a la Ciutadania, OAC) or sent via certified and/or standard mail to the Consell de Formentera (Plaça de la Constitució, 1, 07860 Sant Francesc) until 12 April 2022.

Juniors

This popular category is geared toward young people between the ages of 12 and 18. To participate, send no more than three images to concursfoto@conselldeformentera.cat before 12 April. The first prize in this category is a compact digital camera, the second a digital instant camera and the third a sports camera.

Winning entries are incorporated into the Formentera Archive of Image and Sound and become property of the Consell de Formentera, which may use them in posters and billboards, on the Internet, or any other way it deems appropriate.

History

Nineteen years of submissions have left the island's government with a valuable trove of approximately 1,200 photographs from more than 300 participants. Past submissions have come from mainland Spain and even other countries in Europe, proof of the contest's growing prominence.

Exhibition and awards ceremony

On Monday 2 May, the contest will culminate with a prize ceremony for winners and an exhibition of submissions at the Sala d'Exposicions "Ajuntament Vell". The exhibition will remain open until 14 May. Complete details, as well as terms and conditions, are available on the Consell de Formentera website.

Formentera celebrates International Women's Day with a whole month of activities

foto 2022 dia de la donaToday Ana Juan, President of the Consell de Formentera and Councillor of Equality, and Dolores Fernández Tamargo, President of Espai Dones, presented the events calendar for International Women's Day.

This year's 8 March celebrations will take place under the slogan "Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow" - "a forward-looking perspective" which President Juan described as "essential if we wish to build a future with real equality". Juan pointed out that the Consell's first internal plan for equality is currently in development, "so that for us, as an institution, equality is not just an objective or an ideal, but a reality for all our staff".

She asserted that local government should be "the mirror of a society that is constructed on gender equality", and said that in the months ahead a reconciliation and co-responsibility agent would incorporate municipal government to "study new ways and steps to facilitate and improve family-friendly policies for islanders, so that the burden of care within the family does not limit anyone's professional development". Lastly, Juan encouraged the public to participate in this year's activities, which she described as "numerous, diverse and designed to deploy education to safeguard our rights as women".

For her part, the Espai Dones president pointed out that the nearly month-long programme would kick off this afternoon. Fernández praised "the collaboration of all the groups and associations that have participated in the extensive program" and insisted, "We must continue to demand and fight for equality, and men must be involved too".

New protocol to spot and report cases of child abuse in extracurricular programmes

The Formentera Office of Youth report that yesterday's issue of the Official Gazette of the Balearic Islands (Butlletí Oficial de les Illes Balears, BOIB) features notice of approval by the Director General of the Balearic Office of Children, Youth and Families (Direcció General de Infància, Joventut i Famílies, DGIJF) of protocol to detect, communicate, evaluate, treat and monitor cases of abuse in non-school leisure activities for children and youth.

Vanessa Parellada, Councillor of Youth and Citizen Participation, has discussed the protocol with local associations to ensure they have the tools to report violence against minors, regardless of immediate attention that victims may be receiving, per Articles 15 and 16 of Organic Law 8/2021 (4 June) on comprehensive protection of children and adolescents against violence.

Click here to view the protocol in Catalan and Spanish as well as the form to register for DGIJF's targetted training courses organised in association with the Youth Agency of the Balearic Islands (Institut Balear de la Joventut, IBJove) to help spot and report these cases.

Councillor Parellada told association representatives that "since some of you organise activities for children, we believe it is necessary to ensure that this training reaches as far possible, and work together to spot abuse and contribute to a safer and fairer world for our children".
