Formentera initiates residents and workers' barometers to spot problems and seek solutions

foto 2022 barometreThe Formentera Data Observatory, part of the Formentera Office of Tourism, is pleased to report on the launch of a mechanism to assess the experience of residents, workers and businesses. Alejandra Ferrer, Vice-President and Councillor of Tourism, described the aim of the surveys as "gauging the perception and opinion of people who live and work on Formentera, as well as entrepreneurs, to spot problems and, at the level of municipal government, seek possible solutions".

The surveys are available in Catalan and Spanish at observatorideformentera.cat and at the following links:

Barometer for residents and workers

Barometer for businesses

The Formentera Office of Citizen Participation has also sent surveys to associations, students, senior citizens and new islanders so that individuals who choose to do so may actively participate in the study in total anonymity. Surveys will also be sent to the Formentera Small- and Medium-Sized Business Group (PIMEF), Chamber of Commerce and Association of Formentera Hotels so that they can be forwarded on to local tradespeople.

The Data Observatory has also conducted direct surveys with commercial and service businesses, residents and workers.

The answers received to date confirm the distinct opinions and needs of each social group; these differences can also be seen based on where respondents live. The subsequent study and analysis will track the various social groups and places of residence. The same goes for commercial and service businesses, since each sector also has specific needs.

"We hope that survey conclusions will help us to make a better island for islanders and tourists alike", Ferrer stressed, who added that "this study is tuned for a brand of local development that is compatible with the environment and which enhances social measures".

Results will be obtained and conclusions drawn later this year.

Presenting Miren Jaurne's "La Venus que rompió el espejo"

The Formentera Office of Culture is pleased to announce that from 7.30pm on Thursday 10 March, author Miren Jaurne's La Venus que rompió el espejo will be presented at Marià Villangómez Library. Jaurne and library coordinator Lilian Heinrichs will be on hand at the presentation, where two signed copies of La Venus... will be raffled among attendees. This presentation is part of the International Women's Day programme.

Miren Jaurne (Madrid, 1983) grew up in Madrid in the nineties. Her childhood and adolescence were marked by fatphobia and bullying in a society that celebrated thin bodies. Passionate about reading, writing and storytelling, Jaurne obtained a diploma in film and television scriptwriting at the Instituto de Cinema de Madrid (ICM) and soon after launched a YouTube channel giving voice to those who, like her, did not fit with the canons of modern society. What emerged –La Venus que rompió el espejo– was Jaurne's first book and one which starts with harassment, eating disorders and self-harm before arriving at acceptance and creating one's own platform to communicate this message of respect for others and, above all, oneself.

In this book, the author looks back at her darkest moments and shows us that judging a person on physical appearance, or giving others the power to do so, is not an option. We must not be ashamed of ourselves and a timely "Get lost!" can save us from falling into a spiral of self-destruction. The person who writes the book today is a woman who has overcome her fears and has unhesitatingly joined the fight to stop bullying.

"Capital for Formentera" – Ana Juan asks Armengol to approve maritime transport order

foto 2022 visita armengol CbToday Ana Juan, President of the Consell de Formentera, along with cabinet councillors, met Francina Armengol, the regional premier, to review the strategic projects being developed this term on Formentera and those that are pending and in the pipeline.

First, President Juan stressed "the good understanding" between the municipal and regional administrations, and "coordination around policies with considerable local impact". Juan wanted the cabinet to be present at the meeting so they could learn first-hand about the projects. "We told the premier that, for Formentera, the maritime transport order is essential this term", she said, insisting the decree must affect "not only the regular line but also day trips". She also underscored the importance of "guarantees on islander mobility", and asserted that "service minimums and maximums be respected". Juan also asked the chief of the Balearic government to "act as a go-between for the distinct administrations involved in regulating maritime transport and restructuring the port".

For her part, Francina Armengol underlined the joint work between the Govern and the Consell over the last seven years. She also made assurances that the regional government had already "practically completed the maritime transport order" and that it would reflect local demands. She drew attention to "fundamental" investments in education, social services and health. Armengol announced that on Monday the government commission would lay the groundwork for IbSalut to bid to build a permanent 061 emergency response base on Formentera. After the meeting, Juan and Armengol visited the haemodialysis service works, which started this year.
