Calling all stargazers: Formentera Astronòmica turns two

foto 2022 f astronomica BThe Formentera Office of Tourism is pleased to present the second Formentera Astronòmica, which this year will take place between May 6 and 8. Formentera Astronòmica is intended for the general public, residents and tourists who wish to discover part of this exciting world with their families, partners or friends.

"After the success of last year's edition, and conscious of Formentera's privileged position for stargazing, the Consell is promoting Formentera Astronòmica once again", explained Alejandra Ferrer, Vice President and Councillor of Tourism, who pointed out, "The event is organised right at the beginning of the season to attract visitors with a one of a kind programme centred on astronomy".

Alessia Comis, director of Formentera Astronòmica, confided, "We have put together a very complete programme that will allow visitors to enjoy the event as a romantic getaway or a several-day outing with the family". Comis said that she hoped that this angle would be taken up by journalists covering Formentera Astronòmica to give it more visibility. The goal is to reach one hundred participants.

Programme

The daytime part of the event will be held in Sant Francesc, with talks playing out in a hotel and the workshops in Plaça de la Constitució. Children's workshops will again be included as well and will be open to residents. They will take place from 10.00am to 2.00pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday so that Formentera families and schools can participate. Children aged zero to fourteen are additionally invited to take part in a drawing contest; this year's theme is "The Star Tourist". Drawings can be submitted until 6 May to concurso@formenteraastronomica.com.

The nocturnal part of Formentera Astronòmica, set in various natural spaces with scant light pollution, will fuse with gastronomy. Two themed stargazing dinners mean participants will be able to travel into space with telescopes and take part a workshop on night photography.

Speakers specialised in astronomy include Luisella Giulicchi, president of Women in Aerospace; Carlos Briones, researcher at the Spanish National Research Council; Manuel González, astronomer; Eva Ramírez, expert at INECO; Asier Arranz, disseminator of AI and astronomy at Nvidia; Dalila Dawid, expert in night photography; Miguel Ángel Molina, director of GMV's space division; Rosa Rodríguez, from the Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System (SOCIB), and Guillermo De Haro, writer at Jotdown and professor at IE Business School.

The Astronomical Association of Formentera will again collaborate in the event. With the help of AAF's new telescopes, two night sky observation sessions will be staged and open to all, by reservation. AAF will share the best spots for stargazing on the island.

Formentera presents promotional activities in Portugal and Barcelona

The Formentera Office of Tourism is pleased to report on the promotional activities it is carrying out this week in Portugal and Barcelona. Between tomorrow, Tuesday 29 March, and Thursday 31 March, Formentera will participate in three promotional roadshows in the Portuguese cities of Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra.

"At these events, travel agents, tour operators and professionals will be able to see the destination at a stand and get all the necessary information so that they know first-hand everything from how to make reservations and get here, to cultural and sporting events in the pre and post season", explained Alejandra Ferrer, Vice-President and Councillor of Tourism. Also on display will be Formentera's ornithological and heritage routes as well as details about steps that the island has taken "to be a more sustainable destination where travellers have a unique experience in contact with nature", added Councillor Ferrer.

These actions reinforce other efforts to promote Formentera, like at the BTL travel expo in Lisbon, 16 to 20 March. Councillor Ferrer described Portugal as "a market that in the last two seasons has increased its presence on our island".

Promotion in Spain

Between 29 March and 3 April Formentera will participate in two promotional fairs in Barcelona. On the one hand, from 29 to 31 March, local representatives will join the diving sector at the Mediterranean Diving Show. In this sense, Councillor Ferrer confided, "We want to take advantage of our transparent waters to promote Formentera as an ideal destination for diving and at the same time raise awareness about the need to protect our waters in order to continue enjoying them".

Lastly, between 1 and 3 April, the island will be promoted at the BTravel fair in Barcelona. As in Portugal, there, Formentera will tout off-season events and its credentials as a sustainable island that seeks a respectful brand of tourism.
