More than 600 participants in the Formentera All Round Trail

foto 2022 fartThe eleventh Formentera All Round Trail (FART) will take place tomorrow Saturday 2 April and include the usual three circuits: the 72K FART, the 42K Half Round Formentera Trail and the 21K Tros de FART. A total of 618 participants have registered for the Consell de Formentera-, Son Marçal Supporters' Club- and Elitechip SL-sponsored event.

The FART route follows the Formentera coastline, with participants setting out from the port of La Savina at 9.00am and finishing in the same location. At 11.30am, runners in the Half Round Formentera Trail will start at Es Arenals beach and continue to the port. This year's Tros de FART will take place Saturday, at 4.30pm, with runners covering the distance between Es Caló and La Savina. This change was motivated by the fact that there will be more hours of daylight so runners' arrival times can be at staggered throughout the afternoon. The FART can also be done in relay pairs.

April, a month full of sporting events

Paula Ferrer, Councillor of Sports, stressed that the FART is "one of the foremost events on the island's calendar of sporting events; it embodies the spirit of participatory sport, with participants enjoying the event, the island and being respectful of the environment". This April, "sport is in the air", Ferrer insisted, with the island set to host the FART, the Volta Cicloturista (9 and 10 April), the 19th Regata Ophiusa (14 and 16 April) and the Spanish championship of Catalan catamaran (14 to 17 April).

In the word's of Alejandra Ferrer, Vice President and Councillor of Tourism, "The FART and other April sporting and cultural events are part of the Consell de Formentera's impulse to offer a healthy alternative to recreational and leisure activities. These functions are committed to the environment and to stretching out the tourist season at an ideal time of year to enjoy the quieter Formentera".

Participants in the FART are required to know and abide by certain rules, since part of the run takes place inside protected areas, which will be appropriately marked. In these zones, among other restrictions, participants must not use any sound devices that produce strident noises, nor may they deviate from the signalled route, shout or make other loud noises.

Organisers will set up five refreshment stations along the FART, three on the Half Round Trail and one on the Tros de FART.

Old La Mola windmill gets new information point

foto 2022 punt info moli vell AToday Ana Juan, President of the Consell de Formentera, and Raquel Guasch, Councillor of Heritage, presented the new Molí Vell de la Mola information point, located in an old warehouse next to the protected landmark.

As part of a project which was overseen by the Formentera Office of Heritage, the information point at the "Old La Mola windmill" features a permanent exhibition consisting of four panels highlighting the process of turning grain into bread and its importance in the human diet. There is also a hand-operated millstone of recent fabrication together with assorted samples of grain.

President Juan said the new space represented "one step further in our policy of safeguarding and showcasing heritage assets, and the Formentera Office of Heritage is at the forefront". The last two years have brought approval of protected landmark status for the windmill and surrounding area, restoration of the mill and its sweeps and extended public hours. "Now we are taking another step in the enhancement of a windmill that is part of our history".

For her part, Councillor Guasch pointed out that the lease signed in 2020 between local government and the landmark's owners, the Illes Balears Foundation, "enables us to oversee opening hours and visits as well as to open new spaces like this information point". Guasch asserted that the new space would "move us closer to our goal of opening Formentera's heritage to islanders and tourists alike so they can learn more about it in an up-close and familiar way".

The permanent exhibition offers detailed insight about milling and the various devices which have traditionally served this purpose, dedicating special attention to flour windmills and the names of component parts. The hand-operated millstone can be operated by school children visiting the Moli Vell de la Mola under the supervision of accompanying adults. This piece serves as a counterpoint to the old windmill, which harnessed the wind to yield more with less effort.

This information point has been put in place with in-house funding and has involved an investment of roughly €1,500. A space has been set up for visitors to use. Opening hours during the month of April will be from Tuesday to Saturday from 10.00am to 1.00pm. Admission is free.

Students in drawing and painting course show work at "Ajuntament Vell"

The Formentera Office of Culture is pleased to report that from 4 to 9 April, the Sala d'Exposicions "Ajuntament Vell" will host work from students in a drawing and painting course taught by Teresa Matilla.

The exhibition showcases students' work using various approaches, including oil and acrylics and combinations of impasto, recycling and volumetric techniques. In the words of Matilla, "the art of creation mobilises the experiences that have nourished the artist and must come from an inner impulse". She added that students were free to decide on which path of study they followed in the creation of their pieces. Themes featured in the display will therefore be varied, with techniques and styles proposed by the students themselves.

The opening is scheduled for Monday 4 April at 6.00pm. The exhibition will be open Tuesday to Saturday, 11.00am to 2.00pm and 6.00pm to 8.00pm.
