foto 2022iv casal de joves BThe Formentera Office of Youth is pleased to announce the programme offered by the team of the island's youth drop-in centre this April. "It's all about entertainment and support for young people, and activities related to the Beni Trutmann photography contest are particularly stand-out features of this month's programme", said Vanessa Parellada, Councillor of Youth, who pointed out that the end of the month wound find local youth joining traditional Sant Jordi celebrations, too.

The deadline to compete is Tuesday 12 April, and the Casal will help participating youth to send their snapshots. On Saturday 16 April, there will be another afternoon of games where a space will be created for group play and sharing. A cooking workshop will take place on Friday 22 April.

Sant Jordi

foto 2022 ff AThe Formentera Office of Tourism is pleased to report that the Formentera Fotogràfica festival will celebrate its tenth year from 26 to 29 May with a programme of more than 20 professionals from the world of the image. Over four days, professionals and amateurs of contemporary visual culture, photographers, filmmakers, curators, editors, journalists, writers, booksellers and professionals of the still and moving image will converge on our island.

Alejandra Ferrer, Vice President and Councillor of Tourism, pointed up the outstanding speakers scheduled to participate in the event's tenth edition, which includes a very special exhibition to run mid-May to late June in Es Pujols' Plaça Europa. "Once again this year, this festival of photography will place Formentera at the fore of the national photography scene", said Councillor Ferrer, who pointed out that organisers had lined up "a first-class sampling of photography for the enjoyment of islanders and tourists, who we hope this off-season event can draw".

Exhibition

Formentera Fotogràfica also brings with it an exhibition, "50 Photographs with History", in which curators José María Díaz-Maroto and Gonzalo Revidiego retrace the history of photography in Spain over the last eighty years. The open-air group exhibition looks at photography in Spain through fifty nationally- and internally-acclaimed photographers, from the masters of the early twentieth century to contemporary names in the craft. The exhibition is organised by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), the Consell de Formentera and Formentera Fotogràfica. Seventeen national award winners feature among the selection of photographers. The exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to use their mobile phones to take a guided tour by scanning QR codes located on each photograph.

Programme

At the Sala de Cultura-Cinema in Sant Francesc, the epicentre of the festival, participants will enjoy lectures, talks and screenings on topics such as war conflicts, human rights, the situation of women, migratory movements and the environment, among others. Participants will include photojournalists like Emilio Morenatti (Pulitzer Prize, 2021) and Santi Palacios (National Photojournalism Award, 2015 and 2016). In addition to the ten scheduled talks and presentations, festival attendees will be able to participate in hands-on sessions in assorted indoor and outdoor locations on the island.

To register and view the complete programme, visit https://www.formenterafotografica.com. Residents of Formentera receive a 50 % discount.

Tribute to Ramon Masats

Among the activities will be a tribute to Ramon Masats (National Photography Award, 2004) offered by journalist Chema Conesa, recently awarded the Ministry of Culture's Gold Medal for Fine Arts Merit. Both will be on hand to review Masats' trajectory as a human being and his professional career, revisiting past work as well as his personal archive and writings.

Formentera Fotogràfica is a festival promoted by the Consell de Formentera and directed by Francesc Fàbregas. It is a space for knowledge, reflection and collective creation through intimately-sized practical and theoretical sessions led by leading names in photography and contemporary visual culture. The festival is for professionals, students and amateurs of the image who share a desire to exchange experiences with peers in an ideal environment such as Formentera.

Irrigation plan will unlock €1.06m investment to improve regenerated water use on Formentera

foto 2022 pla regadiusToday in Palma, Josep Marí, Councillor of Rural Environment of the Consell de Formentera, and Rita Costa, from the Formentera Community of Irrigators (CRF), attended the signing of an agreement between irrigators' groups on Formentera and in Porreres and the State Commercial Society of Agricultural Infrastructures (Sociedad Mercantil Estatal de Infraestructuras Agrarias, SEIASA) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. This agreement marks the start of phase one of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), which envisions implementing sustainable irrigation modernisation projects on Formentera and in Porreres.

The agreement, which was signed this Tuesday between the heads of SEIASA and the two groups of irrigators at the offices of the central government's delegation in Palma, involves the investment of €8.48 million in Next Generation funding to optimise, digitise management and improve the quality of water which is reclaimed for agricultural irrigation on Formentera and in Porreres.

With central government delegate Aina Calvo presiding, the ceremony consisted in the signing of the agreements between Francisco Rodríguez Mulero, president of SEIASA; Rita Costa Ferrer, president of CRF, and Juan Mora Adrover, president of the irrigation community of Porreres. Mae de la Concha, Balearic Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, also attended the signing.

The 'Consolidating Irrigation by Optimising Reclaimed Water on Formentera' project has a budget of €1.06m (VAT not included) to modernise 82 hectares of local land under the care of 75 irrigators. Plans envisage improving water quality by improving how reclaimed water is used. Efficiency improvements will affect how water is pumped from the pond to plots and water management will be optimised by digitising irrigation through the installation of a remote control system.

Investments included in the irrigation plan are of a public-private nature. The PRTR will cover up to 80% of eligible expenses, while the irrigation communities and users will contribute the rest.

Formentera gears up for Téntol, a show for the whole family in the Sant Ferran town square

The Formentera Office of Culture is pleased to report that as part of the island's plans to celebrate Sant Jordi, the Manipulats theatre troupe will be on Formentera to perform Téntol.

The 50-minute show, which will take place at 12 noon Saturday 9 April in Sant Ferran's Plaça de l'Església, is free of charge. Reservations are not required to attend.

Téntol is a circus show for families that is based on play and spontaneous movements. The two protagonists, played by Gràcia Moragues and Mateu Canyelles, string together ideas and toys and mobilise a wide range of emotions. With Téntol, Manipulats cast a plea for leisure and recreational time as a way of creating culture, singularities, communities and personalities.

In 2014 Moragues and Canyelles formed Manipulats on Mallorca after training at the Rogelio Rivel Circus Arts Center in Barcelona (2008-2010) and then at Codarts Circus Arts in Rotterdam (2010-2014). The troupe's previous collaborations include work with De Dansers, Circ Bover and Mariantònia Oliver, and they are members of Collectif Temporadas. After Mel-òdic, Salvatges and Trot, Téntol is their most recent creation.
