Consell de Formentera revives language volunteer programme

The Language Advisory Service (Servei d'Assessorament Lingüístic, SAL) of the Consell de Formentera is pleased to announce the resurrection of a language volunteer programme that connects people eager to share their Catalan with individuals who are keen to learn it better, gain confidence or simply practise it.

Volunteers and beneficiaries need only be 18 years old and willing to dedicate an hour a week, and to commit to meeting a minimum of five times. The first meeting is always arranged by the SAL and takes place, after an initial encounter, in a local bar. In fact, refreshments at the first meeting are paid for by the SAL.

Raquel Guasch, Councillor of Language Policy, said the initiative was about "creating new spaces for conversation where learners can use Catalan with more confidence".

Interested parties should send an email to sal@conselldeformentera.cat and a first meeting with the language partner will be arranged based on availability.

End of application submissions to moor in S'Estany des Peix

foto 2022 retirada estanyThe Formentera Office of Environment reports that the deadline for applications to moor in S'Estany des Peix has passed. Requests will now be reviewed and the provisional list of recipients will be published on the bulletin board of the Consell de Formentera as soon as scoring criteria are applied, in approximately June.

An initial tally registered roughly 480 applications; some are repeats, and some, like those on list 6, present characteristics that make the applicant ineligible for mooring, as set out in the rules on mooring and the legal rubric for mooring equipment. The scheme to regulate moorage in S'Estany des Peix envisions the installation of mooring points on floating pontoons and 207 anchoring points, which will be distributed across low-impact buoys.

Antoni Tur, Councillor of Environment, said the first review of applications was still pending, but asserted that the number of requests was in line with expectations, "given the large number of boats that anchor in summer in this protected site". He also remarked that the Consell "will comply with the objective of preserving this space". Tur pointed out that the regulations approved in plenary prioritise "traditional boats of limited length and engine power", and that the number of years a boat has been anchored will also be taken into account. The rules also offer a bonus for traditional boats, retired individuals and large families.

People who wish to receive information on the procedure can contact the Formentera Office of Environment in Sant Ferran. From 2 May, the office is open from 10.00am to 12 noon.

300-plus deadweight anchors pulled from lake bottom

Crews continue to remove deadweight anchors and install pontoons and environmentally-friendly buoys at S'Estany des Peix. Since the start of the work, more than three hundred moorings and two hundred kilogrammes of waste have been removed from the floor of the lake, and there is still a large area to be cleaned.

Councillor Tur highlighted the cooperation of seafarers and people whose boats are anchored at the lake while work is under way.

Soon the Consell de Formentera will start hiring staff to control the regulated anchorage scheme and to assist users.

Ban on nuisance works takes effect from 1 May

The Formentera Office of Territory reports that as of Sunday 1 May, a municipal ordinance will prohibit construction projects that create noise and vibrations which may be a nuisance in urban and tourist areas.

From 1 May to 15 October, the only projects permitted in urban and tourist areas are work which does not cause the acoustic and vibratory nuisances typical of excavations and foundation and structural builds. Setting up scaffolding on public roads is prohibited as well. To ensure compliance with the rules, the Consell de Formentera will instruct the local police to reinforce patrols.

Exceptions

Non-nuisance small-scale and indoor projects addressing existing pipework issues which must be corrected for reasons of health or safety, or urgent works that cannot be delayed, may be performed provided an associated request has been made and reviewed, and permission has been expressly granted. Such exceptions will be granted on a case by case basis.

Formentera asks to join Eivissa Airport Routes Committee to defend local connectivity

President Ana Juan has asked the Government of the Balearic Islands to let the Consell de Formentera join the Eivissa Airport Routes Committee (CDRAE), a body with representation from the Consell d'Eivissa, the town councils of Eivissa, the central government's envoy in the Balearic Islands and organisations such as AENA. In the words of President Juan, Formentera's inclusion in this committee would give the island "a say in the connections between Eivissa airport and mainland Spain and international destinations".

In a letter, President Juan reminded Josep Marí Ribas, Balearic Minister of Mobility, that "the only air travel from Formentera to the mainland and abroad is through the airport of our neighbouring island of Eivissa. Due to the compounded situation of insularity we face, Formentera residents' dependence on Es Codolar airport means we are in thrall to the vicissitudes of flight connections".

For this reason, the Consell is requesting to join the CDRAE so that "our island is represented in the decisions affecting both national and international flight schedules". The scheduling of these connections must guarantee year-round connectivity and they also have a direct impact on Formentera as a tourist destination, the island's main economic industry.

Formation and objectives

Airport Route Committees emerged in 2011 as an initiative of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to create a single space for dialogue where central, regional and local administrations, together with the business sector, participate in decision-making that directly affects airport connectivity. In this way, all stakeholders can participate in promoting air transport.

The objectives of the committee are to advocate for actions to strengthen and guarantee year-round air connectivity, with collaboration from the various airlines, and to establish flight routes in accordance with needs on each of the islands.

Start of summer hours for metred parking on Formentera

foto 2022 aparcament la savinaThe Formentera Office of Mobility reports that Sunday 1 May will mark the start of summer rules for metred parking in La Savina, Sant Francesc, Sant Ferran and Es Pujols. The rules will be in effect from Monday to Sunday from 9.00am to 9.00pm.

Blue zone passes will be valid in any blue zone parking space on the island, and drivers without an exemption must pay €1.20 an hour. Residents with their exemption in order may obtain passes free of charge.

Under summer rules, motorists equipped with a pass can leave their vehicles in blue zone spaces for up to a day, rather than three days, as occurs in winter. Green zone spaces are only open to drivers of authorised vehicles and for a maximum of one day in summer. Accredited residents of La Savina can park their vehicles for up to 15 days, as is already the case in winter.
