More than 3,700 athletes gather for Formentera Half Marathon and 8K run this Saturday

foto 2022 mitja maraToday Ana Juan, President of the Consell de Formentera; Alejandra Ferrer, Vice President and Councillor of Tourism, and Paula Ferrer, Councillor of Sports, presented the 13th Half Marathon of Formentera and the ninth 8K run from Sant Ferran to La Savina, both of which will take place Saturday 14 May. More than 3,700 athletes from various countries and cities in Spain have signed up to take part in the trials. The presentation was also attended by Manual Hernández, director of Unisport Consulting, which organises the two events; Nuria de la Torre, director of marketing at Trasmapi, and Gaelle Ledour, chief of the Eivissa-Formentera division of Caixabank. Trasmapi and Caixabank are the two main sponsors of the races.

President Juan insisted that Formentera was "ready and excited to receive the biggest trial on the island's extensive spring sports calendar". She also highlighted changes at this year's starting line: "As an event, the Half Marathon about enjoying sport and this special ecosystem that is Formentera, and it is important for everyone that the event be respectful of the environment. So this year, to respect the habitat of the virot [Puffinus mauretanicus], the entertainment tent has been moved from the starting line in La Mola; and also, like last year, no single-use plastics will be used at the event".

Vice President Ferrer underscored "the attractiveness of this competition that, apart from giving participants a way to tour the island from tip to tip, provides them and their companions with a chance to enjoy Formentera, and our nature, culture and gastronomy, in the month of May".

Formentera's spring of sport

For her part, Paula Ferrer said she was "very satisfied because the island is showing that we can host globally relevant events in an array of sports like sailing, judo, chess, cycling and athletics. Taken together, the various functions draw upwards of six thousand people to the island". The Councillor of Sports additionally praised "the work of volunteers, security forces, civil protection and medical workers that make this competition possible".

Lastly, Manuel Hernández stressed that "the race has again practically covered its quota of participants, another sign of its relevance and consolidation on the national and international calendar".

Saving 22,500 plastic bottles

As in 2021, whenever they wish, participants will be able to fill a reusable water bottle delivered at the finish line with water or soft drinks. The containers can be filled at the various refreshment points throughout the race. This will save up to 22,500 plastic bottles in one day.

Ecopilas will be back as well to encourage people to recycle batteries and, this year, in collaboration with the Consell de Formentera and Balearic Government, awareness activities will focus on teaching island pupils about the importance of recycling a highly polluting material.

The two races will start at 5.30pm: the Half Marathon, as usual, at La Mola lighthouse, and the 8K run in Sant Ferran.

Approval of ordinance regulating public mooring fees at S'Estany des Peix

foto 2022v ple extraToday members of the Consell de Formentera convened for a one-off plenary session which secured initial approval for an ordinance regulating public fees to moor watercraft at S'Estany des Peix. The proposal passed with "yes" votes from the cabinet (GxF and PSOE) despite the abstention of the opposition (Sa Unió). This ordinance was drafted after a period of public consultation; with initial approval now secured, members of the public will have 30 calendar days to submit comments. Antoni Tur, Councillor of Environment, pointed out that "the environmental deterioration brought about by uncontrolled anchoring" in Ses Salines Nature Reserve made regulation imperative. The system, according to Councillor Tur, "prioritises the traditional use of small boats with limited engine power" as well as other aspects like the time that a boat-owner has been anchoring. He also pointed out that discounts would apply to individuals with traditional boats, retirees and large families.

The vast majority of individuals who use the lake have boats that are small or medium-sized, and will pay between €50 and €135 a month. Among the discounts for which users may be eligible, retirees will get 40% off; large families, 30% off; users of traditional types of vessels, 15% off, and users of zero-emission vessels, 25% off.

Start of controls on access to Ses Salines Nature Reserve and Sa Tanca d'Allà Dins in Es Cap de Barbaria

foto 2022 acces AThe Formentera Office of Mobility reports that controls on access to Platja de ses Illetes in the Ses Salines Nature Reserve will take effect tomorrow 12 May. Access to the areas of Es Cavall d'en Borràs and Llevant, also in the reserve, will be regulated from 1 June. As usual, access will be free for Formentera residents.

Tomorrow to 15 June, non-residents must pay €4 per car and €2 per motorcycle, then €5 and €3, respectively, until 15 July. Subsequently and through August, the fee climbs to €6/€3, before dropping to €5/€3 in the first half of September and €4/€2 by the second half of the month.

Pedestrians, bicycles, individuals with reduced mobility in vehicles and drivers of electric vehicles can also access the areas for free, while people with hybrid cars will receive a 50% discount on the entry fee. "Our goal is to make mobility in the natural reserve sustainable and avoid saturation in this ecologically valuable place and formidable tourist attraction", said Rafael González, Councillor of Mobility.

The rules remain in force until 15 September at the access point to Es Cavall d'en Borràs and Llevant, and until 30 September at the control point in Ses Illetes. The parking areas accommodate a total of 384 cars and 1,132 motorcycles.

Regulation at Es Cap lighthouse

Rules on motor vehicle access to Es Cap de Barbaria lighthouse will be rolled out this Sunday 15 May, and stay in force until 15 October. González said the initiative was about "preserving this natural site in the public estate of Sa Tanca d'Allà Dins".

The councillor pointed out that "for the last five seasons, motor vehicle access has been restricted with a barrier at kilometer 6.5 of the Es Cap road; the rules guarantee a satisfactory experience and the absence of obstacles for tourists and islanders visiting the lighthouse of Es Cap and Es Garroveret defence tower".

Before the fence there is a car park with capacity for sixty cars and one hundred motorcycles so that visitors can leave their vehicles and proceed to the lighthouse on foot or by bicycle.

At peak hours, from 11.00am to 1.00pm and 6.00pm to 10.00pm, there will be a guard/informant next to the barrier. The guard will also allow people with reduced mobility to access the area by vehicle.
