Formentera celebrates International Yoga Day with Verónica Blume

The Formentera Office of Tourism is pleased to announce that on Tuesday 21 June, model and yogi Verónica Blume will be on the island to help us celebrate International Yoga Day.

To mark the special day, the Consell de Formentera and Puro Bienestar have revived a one of a kind master class in La Savina port with Blume, an international leading light in the profession.

The United Nations has chosen this date to build awareness around the benefits of yoga, a holistic wellness discipline which engages the body in an integral, harmonious and balanced way while respecting natural cycles.

"The Way Back to You" promises to be a special, intimate and very personal exercise. There will be a consciousness-oriented master class in yoga, which organisers hope will push attendees to start, remember or resume that path that leads back to themselves.

The class is scheduled for 8.00pm, June 21, on the patio of the Fishermen's Guild [Confraria de Pescadors] in La Savina.

This event is charitable and tuned for sustainability, so proceeds will go to preserving posidonia seagrass. Registration costs €25. Space is limited and mats will be provided, but participants should bring warm clothing for the final relaxation exercise.

Information push to ensure contract details are visible in rental cars parked in La Savina

foto 2022 zona blava vehicles lloguerThe Formentera Office of Mobility reports that a rental contract must be visible in all rental vehicles that are left in blue/green metred parking and overflow parking areas in La Savina between the months of May and October. Violators may be subject to fines. Today, to pre-empt parking problems in La Savina, blue zone parking attendants embarked on a push to raise awareness about this measure.

"Last summer unrented rental vehicles parked in La Savina saturated the area", explained Rafael González, Councillor of Mobility. "Now, with changes made to the ordinance and the rule change currently being worked out, rental vehicles may not be parked in La Savina unless the details of an active rental contract are left visible. The document must be signed by the company that owns the vehicle and a natural or legal third party", he added.

Local car-hire companies have received a form that must be filled out and left by drivers in a visible area in the front of the car when they park. In the days ahead, blue zone attendants will leave flyers on rental vehicles parked in La Savina reminding motorists that failure to comply with the measure could soon mean fines.

Last summer unrented rental vehicles parked in pay-to-park areas in La Savina were at the centre of 150 fines issued by Formentera Local Police. Under the modified ordinance, blue zone attendants will be able to issue fines too. "This regulatory change was communicated and agreed with the La Savina Residents' Association and car rental companies in response to parking shortages in the centre of La Savina last July and August", said Councillor González.

Affective-sexual training for years 5 and 6 and their families

From 6 to 8 June, the Formentera Office of Social Welfare will offer a course in affective-sexual training for pupils in primary years five and six and their families. Participants will learn the basics of maintaining respectful and healthy relationships –not only with others, but with themselves as well– and review the hormonal, emotional and physical changes typical of adolescence.

On the same days as the in-school workshops, another training course will offer parents resources to support and guide their teenage children and to address affective-sexual issues. Parents of pupils in years five and six at CEIP Sant Ferran are asked to attend on 6 June; parents in La Mola, on 7 June, and parents at CEIP Mestre Lluís Andreu, on 8 June. Workshops begin at 5.00pm and are held at each respective school.

The training will be led by Teresa Ramos, a social educator and sexologist who facilitates trainings in schools in the Balearic Islands.

Formentera passes new code of practice to guide use of language within Consell de Formentera

foto 2022v pleIn a plenary assembly held today, members of the Consell de Formentera cabinet (GxF and PSOE) overcame the opposition (Sa Unió) to endorse initial approval of the Regulations on Language Use.

Raquel Guasch, Councillor of Language Policy, described the objective of this new regulation as "to review, modify and update the code approved in 2001 by the Ajuntament d'Eivissa i Formentera". The Councillor pointed out that "in this process of linguistic normalisation, the Consell must be the actor that drives, leads, continues and supports our multicultural society". Guasch called the new regulation "ambitious" in that "it proposes language clauses in public contracts, and establishes new criteria to make progress on the challenges facing language standardisation with courageous public policies". Now the agreement will undergo public consultation so that complaints, objections and observations can be submitted.

Home for under-12s and stabilisation of the workforce

Additionally, plenary members learned of the definitive approval of a residence for at-risk minors. This home, according to Rafael Ramírez, Councillor of Social Welfare, is for children under 12 who are unprotected. It will be located in the island's health and social services hub, next to the Formentera Day Centre [Centre de Dia], and will have capacity for ten children. "Children in foster care will get individualised and family care, which will provide a better environment for psychosocial care", said Ramírez.

Assembly members also learned of the agreement on the public offer of employment which aims to reduce temporary employment in the public administration. This offer was agreed in negotiations with the unions and will involve the stabilising 242 jobs of civil servants and staff corresponding to fifty-nine different groups and categories within the Consell de Formentera.

Report from Bartomeu Escandell

Today the Councillor of Economy, Taxes and General Services spoke before the assembly and explained that the areas he manages constitute "the backbone of municipal activity". Also in Escandell's remit are the municipal government's legal services, secretariat, procurement, the various administrative registers and services at the Citizen Information Office [Oficina d'Atenció Ciutadana].

Escandell asserted that the Consell's finances are in order and its economic capacity consolidated, which has made it possible to face the challenges of the pandemic while continuing with the ordinary activity of the Consell and the deployment of all services. "Now, the financial challenge as we face the greatest crisis of our time is to maintain the capacity to provide comprehensive services and stand beside the people who need it most", he added. The councillor also explained that, thanks to the pandemic, the Consell has made the most of teleworking, which, rather than replace traditional modes of working, will complement them. Lastly, the councillor praised staff of the island administration for their professionalism and work "because with their dedication they make a better Consell de Formentera every day".

Official proclamation on LGTBI-phobia

Finally, Ana Juan, President and Councillor of Equality, presented a proclamation on the occasion of the day against LGBTI-phobia (May 17), which was unanimously approved. Juan highlighted "the firmest commitment to encourage people living on Formentera to do so without closets, without discrimination, with a constructive impulse to do away with all the barriers and taboos that still exist in our society today".
