Formentera firefighters conduct patrols and practice routes to improve fire response, ask islanders to exercise extreme caution

foto 2022vi practiques bombers AThese days of extreme heat, Consell de Formentera firefighters are patrolling Cala Saona, Es Ram and other areas where the fire risk is high. The crew is also performing forest fire drills, including one last weekend near Sa Roqueta in Es Pujols. The efforts are meant to build fire crews' skills responding to real accidents, handling hose lines, communicating and operating vehicle pumps, not to mention highlight the functions of each team member. Three firefighters and a service chief participated in exercises that involved two fire engines and a light vehicle.

Josep Marí, councillor of interior, explained that the fire department is asking islanders and visitors alike to "take all the necessary precautions given an already high fire risk this season which the heat wave has pushed to new heights".

Formentera convenes children's and youth council for second session this year

foto 2022vi consell joventutThis morning, members of the Children's and Youth Participatory Council (Consell de Participació de la Infància i la Joventut, CPIJ) gathered for the second plenary session so far this school year and the first face-to-face plenary since the start of the pandemic. The meeting was chaired by Ana Juan, president of the Consell de Formentera, and co-chaired by Vanessa Parellada, councillor of youth. With representatives of the island's primary schools unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts, pupils at Marc Ferrer Secondary School (IES Marc Ferrer) were the only other attendees.

The president welcomed plenary councillors and praised their good behaviour during pandemic. For her part, Councillor Parellada drew attention to the fact that the CPIJ plenary assembly had been at the origin of proposals such as the skate park.

The youth councillors proposed changes to improve the skate park's functionality, highlighted potential upgrades at the high school, and asked about formentera.eco security cameras. They also asked about outdoor facilities for archery training, a project on which the Consell de Formentera is already working.

Plenary attendees were also reminded that people under 18 can ride the bus for free and that they will soon be able to practise calisthenics at a dedicated space at the new Espai Cultural de Sant Ferran.

Campaign to flag vehicles without formentera.eco accreditation

foto 2022vi avisos for ecoThe Formentera Office of Mobility reports that yesterday, as formentera.eco regulations took effect for the 2022 season, a parallel push began to flag vehicles not yet cleared to be operated on local roads under the scheme.

Of 236 number plates checked by attendants of metred "blue zone" parking areas, 199 were duly accredited and 37, mostly motorcycles, were not. A notice left on the unaccredited vehicles informs drivers they have 24 hours to obtain formentera.eco accreditation or risk fines.

Formentera.eco accreditation can be requested on www.formentera.eco, where website visitors can additionally search for a vehicle's plate number to see if it has already received clearance. Accreditation is mandatory for cars, motorcycles, vans, trucks, tractors and other motor vehicles driven on Formentera during the regulatory period.
