Eight Formentera athletes get grants for sporting merits in 2021

The Formentera Office of Sports has agreed to offer financial aid to eight local athletes for sporting merits in 2021. This is the first year that money for sporting merits is offered, and the Consell has unlocked €25,000 in assistance. The maximum amount per athlete is €5,000. Individuals set to receive this aid are Mateo Jimenez (sailing), Helena Lafuente (sailing), Sergi Lafuente (sailing), Gisela Colomar (sailing), Hugo Colomar (sailing), Andrea Romero (athletics), Matías Conill (sailing) and Marc Escandell (athletics).

Paula Ferrer, councillor of sport, said the aid "offsets some of the financial burden borne by our athletes who compete at regional, national and international level" and that "the Formentera Office of Sport intends to keep offering this aid in the years ahead".

In granting the aid, the office considered individuals' participation in federated activities and competitions between 1 January and 31 December 2021 as well as in programming and other projects scheduled during the 2021 calendar year. Only individual sports and collective modalities of individual sports were considered.

€80,000 in grants for clubs

Last week, the government commission also approved the unlocking of €80,000 in aid for the local sports programme and the terms of the assistance. This annual call for grants seeks to help clubs and non-profit associations to continue their work preparing athletes.

The concerts will feature young artists from the island. To close out the month, on Saturday 30 July there will be a creative nail workshop.

Open day at new offices of social welfare department and old people's home

foto 2022 residenci AToday the Consell de Formentera held an open day where islanders could see first hand the facilities and offices at the Formentera Day Centre (Centre de Dia) that opened in February. There was also a tour of the new old people's home, which is scheduled to open this autumn. Ana Juan, Consell de Formentera president; Alejandra Ferrer, vice-president, and Rafael Ramírez, councillor of social welfare, together with almost the entire government team, also visited the space with the media.

President Juan stressed, first of all, that "it was necessary to adapt the new social welfare offices to the current needs of islanders who use them" and that the facilities constitute "a quantum leap forward for both users and staff of the Formentera Office of Social Welfare". As for the future old person's residence, Juan said this too would "mark a breakthrough in social and health care and a great improvement in care for dependent people currently on Eivissa and for their families".

Councillor Ramírez, for his part, explained that changes included rearranging the space 'to ensure better care and greater comfort for people". "Technical operations can now be handled much better too", he added, "which makes for better and more efficient service overall".

'Formentera Residence'

Councillor Ramírez insisted that the "Residència de Formentera" ('Formentera Residence') would be operational "by the time pupils are back in classrooms". He called the concept of care at the old people's home "people-centred": "It is a model that promotes functional independence so that, to the extent possible, elderly people at the residence are able to lead their own lives according to their individual beliefs, tastes, desires and interests".

The Formentera Residence has capacity for 18 beds in 14 single rooms and two double rooms. The places will be included in the Public Network for Dependency Care. Facilities consist of a reception area, dining room, living room, common bathrooms, infirmary, geriatric bathroom adapted for bedridden people and three landscaped outdoor areas.

This year's Passarel·la de Moda draws inspiration from Formentera's culture of seafaring

foto 2022 passarella Today the Consell de Formentera presented the 14th Formentera Fashion Show (Passarel·la de Moda) to be held this Friday 1 July at 10.00pm in La Savina. The theme of the 2022 Passarel·la is 'Saltpeter' (Salitre) and the event will feature 22 local designers, four more than last year.

Ana Juan, president and councillor of commerce, stressed that in choosing the theme "we were moved by the idea of preserving our heritage, seafaring culture and fashion, upon which many local women have built their livelihood". President Juan added that "the UN designated 2022 as the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries. The slogan, 'Small scale, great value', fits perfectly with our fishing activity and also with made-on-Formentera fashion and craft designs".

Juan pointed out that the Passarel·la de Moda "is already a local touchstone and that, year after year, we try to improve it to encourage and promote local textile merchants and designers", which she called "a very important asset of our commercial fabric" and "part of the Formentera that we like to show to our visitors".

The event will showcase jewellery, shoes, handbags, wedding dresses and, above all, the island's signature style with world-class avant-garde creations inspired by nature, the sea, the colours and life of Formentera.

The 2022 edition will feature the following firms with local ties: Hippie Shop Formentera, Atzavara, Janne bikinis, Marziposa Lingerie & Passepartoi, Equilibre Formentera, Simona Colzi & Le voyeur Vintage, Macramé & Espardenyes Torres, Molly Mallones & Es Pelegri, Ishvara Kavra de Formentera, Elena Hurtado & Lorenzo Pepe "Obi", Michelle Crocitto, Eva Cardona, Laura López & Ginkgo Creations, Vintage Ibiza and Formentera, Ur Joies and Majoral.

Live music and free shuttle bus service from Sant Francesc

New to this year's event will be live musical performances from musicians José Asunción (violin) and Anastasia McQueen (saxophone) marking each runway presentation.

In addition, for all those who want to go to the event, the Consell has enabled a free bus service. Buses will set out at 9.15pm and 9.30pm from Sa Senieta car park, with a return trip scheduled at 11.30pm from the end of the Marina Promenade (Passeig de la Marina), next to Fishermen's Wharf (Moll de Pescadors).

Twelve professional models from the company Deva Models will walk the catwalk at an event presented by Gonzalo Polo and journalist Elena Gregori.

President Juan also applauded the collaboration of companies and entities like the Formentera Small and Medium-Sized Business Association (Pimef), Balearic Port Authority, Fishermen's Guild, Trasmapi, Ràdio Illa and Carbòniques Tur for making the Passarel·la de Moda possible.
