Formentera to open line of aid for livestock farmers this 2022

foto 2022 ovelles ALast week Josep Marí, Councillor of Rural Environment, met with Juan Antonio Yern, President of the Association of Livestock Farmers of Formentera (Associació de Ramaders, ARF) and Carlos Marí, manager of the local agricultural co-operative (Cooperativa del Camp). Also on hand at the meeting were Loana Fraga, the veterinarian in charge of the ARF's animal health and hygiene group and Pamela Ferrer, the Consell de Formentera's veterinary specialist.

Farmers took the opportunity to express their concern about dog attacks on local livestock. Between December and January there were three fatal attacks involving two lambs and one ewe as well as other attacks that left six ewes injured. Councillor Marí explained that "since last July there is a new protocol for joint action between the pound and the local police so that complaints of dogs found without owner are processed more quickly". 43 such complaints were made in 2021. Associated fines range from €30 to €300.

Councillor Marí also called to mind the push piloted by the Consell last November to safeguard the welfare of pets and livestock by educating dog owners about the importance of not letting animals off property unaccompanied. To that end, Marí once again asked islanders to notify the pound at 630 083 128 if any off-lead dogs are seen without their owner.

The councillor highlighted local government's support for livestock farmers, which he described as "vital for the island's countryside and landscape". In that regard, Marí announced a €30,000 line of subsidies in 2022 for professional livestock and agriculture. A portion of the total will be used to help farmers who meet conditions based on, among other things, how many breeding animals they possess.

Livestock census

It was also announced that the period for mandatory declarations for the livestock census is open until 28 February. Farmers should contact the Formentera Office of Rural Affairs (Conselleria de Medi Rural, CMRF), Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 2.00pm, located at Centre Antoni Tur "Gabrielet".

Meeting participants additionally discussed operations at the slaughterhouse and proposed possible changes in opening hours to enhance use. Consell employees also asked representatives of the sector about the training courses they would be interested in programming in 2022.

Meeting with general director on tourism act

foto 2022 reunio llei turistica AAna Juan, President of the Consell de Formentera, and Alejandra Ferrer, Vice President and Councillor of Tourism, met this morning with Rosana Morillo, Director General of the tourism division of regional government to discuss modifying the tourism act of the Balearic Islands. Later the three sat down with representatives of the island's small- and medium-sized business association (PIMEF), Chamber of Commerce and Hotel Association of Formentera to discuss the same issue.

President Juan had good things to say about the gathering focused on changes to the Balearic Islands' tourism act. "We hope there will be dialogue and consensus and we hope Formentera's particularities will be taken into account, especially in the hotel sector, since most of our accommodations are small family establishments that will need the extra help and involvement of the Administration to guarantee that the legislation's implementation comes with safeguards and that the islands become a pioneering tourist destination", said Juan.

Councillor Ferrer explained that in the weeks ahead this first working meeting would see meetings of a more technical nature as well as other gatherings involving members of the island's tourism sector "to find out what specific needs should be reflected in the legislation".

"We think the end-game of this act is positive, but legislation needs consensus and participation from both the business community and local government so we can guarantee compliance and every one of us work towards the circular and sustainable tourism that we want", emphasised Ferrer. Announcements were also made about specific local issues requiring attention like urban planning exemptions, which should be addressed within the Tourism Planning Commission, "because Formentera has a very specific territorial configuration, with many different types of protection that must be taken into account and assessed individually," she said. Meeting attendees also requested help for business owners: self-assessment plans could be created, and support could be offered around the plan on circularity. Subsidies were also suggested, as well as strategies to promote involvement and quality work.

Consell puts out learning material to shape visibility and drive home value of heritage among youth

foto 2022 patrimoni cap de barbariaThe Formentera Office of Heritage has provided the island's four primary schools and secondary schools with digital learning material aimed at drawing attention to local heritage. This material is part of the 'Coneix patrimoni' (Know Heritage) initiative launched by the Consell at the end of last year.

The educational and other assorted materials developed by the Centmans cooperative at the initiative of the Consell de Formentera will be used in local classrooms. The first educational booklet consists of 18 pages exploring the historical site known as Cap deBarbaria II.

According to Raquel Guasch, Councillor of Heritage, the booklet provides information about the site "to invite and encourage our youth in a multipronged educational way to familiarise themselves with our heritage and pass it on". The first unit comes on a USB flash drive and the project's engineers hope to develop new units on places of importance to local history and heritage.

"Again, this is about getting the word out about and enriching the island's cultural heritage. Whether the history course in November, the workshops on traditional cooking or the Joan Marí Cardona Local Study Days, we're pursuing an array of avenues in an effort to reach all ages. Now it's children and young people's turn. This initiative goes back to start of the legislative term and ties into the impulse to safeguard this legacy and showcase it moving forward", stressed the councillor.
