Owners of vacation property renters must renew authorizations

The Formentera Office of Tourism (Conselleria de Turisme, CT) reports that forms and documentation are now available to renew or extend authorisations for vacation holiday rental properties. In the last two years and due to the pandemic, all permits were extended two years, but now renewals and extensions must be processed for those authorisations that will soon expire.

Renewals can be processed online through the Virtual Citizen Information Office (OVAC) or in person at the Citizen Information Office (OAC). Inquiries can also be made on-site and over the phone, applications can be picked up at the CT, located at Carrer Pius Tur Mayans in Sant Francesc, as well as at the OAC.

"After two years of automatic extensions we are reactivating the renewals process", Alejandra Ferrer, Vice-President and Councillor of Tourism. She called it "a very important step to ensure compliance with the legality of tourist rentals". Ferrer also reported that "in parallel we are working on the 2022 inspection plan to review compliance with the Plan for Quality and detect illegal rentals that contribute to supply shortages for residential and temporary accommodation for workers".

According to the Regulation on commercialised tourist stays in local homes, the registration in the Tourism Registry of Formentera was valid for five years from presentation of the declaration of new rental activity. The period was extended for two more years on account of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, in January 2022, vacation rental registrations in the Formentera Tourism Registry have begun to expire and the owners will have to renew them again. They will also have to comply with the new Plan for Quality, which was also extended due to COVID-19.

Ana Juan, President of the Consell de Formentera; Alejandra Ferrer, Vice-President and Councillor of Tourism; and Carlos Bernús, Director of Tourism Promotions, are currently representing Formentera at the international tourism expo Fitur in Madrid.

President Juan described the island's promotional focal point as "nature-loving and family travellers respectful of the environment, traditions and culture". She also underscored high turnout at the fair, which presages "a turn-around in domestic tourism". "That's good news for the island", according to Juan.

Today Vice-President Ferrer spoke to the press about Formentera as a destination whose draws include "landscapes, well-preserved nature and a one-of-a-kind identity". In order to maintain these features, Ferrer affirmed that the people of Formentera have always been committed to the conservation.

Among municipal initiatives aimed at making local tourism and the island more sustainable, Ferrer spoke about "an impulse in the countryside since reactivation of the Farmer's Co-operative, the establishment of a ceiling on tourism, projects like formentera.eco, Save Posidonia Project and more". She pointed to next steps like guaranteeing safeguards of the marine environment and Formentera's coastline will require establishing a maritime carrying capacity".

Off-season programming

In addition to the island's natural appeals, Ferrer described cultural and sporting events that are organised on Formentera to attract visitors outside high season months. She drew particular attention to "the possibilities that natural and open spaces with few people offer for enjoying the island in a safer way".

Visitors to Formentera's section at the stand shared by the Balearic Islands can find promotional material on the options for family tourism, enjoying the island's environment, fine dining, heritage and off-season cultural and sporting events.  Also on the agenda of the island's representatives will be other promotional activities like meetings with niche travel magazines, web portals, tour operators and travel agents.

For nature lovers, Formentera unveils a catalogue of the island's flora

cartell 2021 Flora de FormenteraThe Formentera Office of Tourism has published an informational brochure exploring the main characteristics of native plants. The island's representatives will use the catalogue at trade fairs to promote tourism with an environmental edge. Residents can access the brochure at www.formentera.es, at this link.

Alejandra Ferrer, Vice President and Councillor of Tourism, remarked that "the island's botanical heritage is one of our most compelling environmental treasures. Formentera's floral catalogue comprises upwards of six hundred plants and it is striking that in a relatively small area we find such a diversity of terrains ranging from cliffs, salt marshes and beaches with dunes to forested areas, fields with crops and more".

"This catalogue is about connecting islanders with their botanical heritage and at the same time pandering to a brand of tourist who cares about nature. It is about highlighting the fragility of the island's natural heritage and encouraging visitors and residents to discover it in a respectful way", said Councillor Ferrer. Photos and texts have been prepared by naturalist Jordi Serapio Riera. The catalogue is available in six languages: Catalan, Spanish, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and German.
